Troubleshooting and FAQ
The plugin's status strip (bottom of the window) and its message history (clock button) usually say what went wrong and what to do. Hover a message to read all of it. If that doesn't help, look for your problem below.
- Is Blender running, with the XIV Instant Edit add-on enabled? Check Edit > Preferences > Add-ons.
- Look at the link icon in the add-on's Instant Edit panel header. If Blender isn't listening, another program (often a second Blender) is using port 42424. Close it: Blender retries every few seconds.
- If you changed the port in the add-on's preferences, change Blender port in the plugin's Settings > Advanced to match.
The add-on and the plugin are different versions. They must match. In the plugin, open Settings > Editors and press Update add-on (close Blender first), or update it in Blender's Get Extensions. Blender's own updater sometimes misses updates.
The export panel lists the reasons and names the meshes. The common ones:
- Not triangulated: add a Triangulate modifier, or triangulate the mesh.
- Vertices without bone weights: weight them. Vertex groups that aren't bones don't count.
- Racial scaling: the model was imported reshaped for another race, which is preview-only. Re-import with racial scaling off (see Racial scaling).
- Export Without Mashup?: meshes from several mods are visible. Pick Create Mashup... as the target, or hide the Contexts you don't want in this export.
- Is your character actually wearing that model, in that mod option? Check the On Screen tab.
- Models imported from the Mod Browser can be ambiguous when a mod uses the same model in several options. Import from On Screen to be sure you edit what your character uses.
- Check the status strip for a warning.
That model's Context is gone, so Quick Export no longer knows where it came from. Send the model from the game again and copy your edited meshes into the new collection.
- Did you save over the same TGA file that was opened, not a copy somewhere else?
- Was it a flattened, 32-bit TGA with alpha? Use the Save Flattened TGA scripts (see Editing textures).
- Is the session Paused in the Sessions tab? Press play, or the retry button.
- Sessions pause when the game or plugin restarts. Open the texture again to resume.
- For compressed textures, width and height must be divisible by 4.
That's the texture's original compression. Turn off Recompress saved textures in the toolbar's options (sliders) to save uncompressed.
Set the editor in Settings > Editors > Texture editor.
- Enable the plugin in Painter: Python > xiv_instant_edit.
- After updating Instant Edit, press Update Painter plugin in Settings, then restart Painter.
Turn on Paint textures in Substance Painter in Settings > Editors. The button only appears in On Screen.
Play it outside combat: an emote, your idle, or walking. It appears under Playing now.
The skeleton library doesn't know your skeleton mods yet. Press Rebuild skeleton library in Settings > Cache. Do this every time you install, update or remove a skeleton mod.
The Recent edits tab shows a count. Open it and undo the interrupted edit to restore its files.
- For a Blender unpacked from a ZIP, use Add a Blender that isn't listed in Settings > Editors.
- Microsoft Store versions, and native Linux programs next to a Wine install of the game, can't be found. Set them up by hand: see Installation and setup.
Please open an issue on GitHub with:
- The plugin and Blender add-on versions (they must match), and your Blender version.
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened, with the message from the status strip.
- Screenshots if you can.
- For Blender problems, the files in the diagnostics folder (Blender Tools panel, diagnostics folder button).
