Game Files
The Game Files tab lists the game's own models, whether or not anyone is wearing them: every hairstyle, face, tail, Viera ear and body of every race, and all equipment, accessories and weapons. You can edit them like any other model, or export their files in bulk.
- Open Game Files and pick a category on the left: Hair, Faces, Tails, Viera ears, Bodies, Equipment, Accessories or Weapons. The first time, it scans the game's file index, which takes about a second.
- Narrow the list down:
- Race: player races are shown by default. NPC races shows the rest.
- Slot for equipment and accessories.
- The search box searches item names, IDs, races and paths.
- For hair, Player-selectable only hides styles only NPCs wear.
- For faces, Player races shows the faces players can pick in character creation.
- Gear and weapons are named after the items that use them, and hairstyles after the item that unlocks them.
Click the arrow on a model to see its materials, their textures and the skeleton files the game loads for it. Hovering shows the same previews as in On Screen.
Use the pencil on a model to edit it in Blender, or the brush on a texture, exactly as in On Screen (see Editing a model in Blender and Editing textures). Your first change goes into a new mod, enabled in your collection. The game files themselves are never changed.
Want every hairstyle for your race as files, for example to build a hair mod or devkit? Export them:
- Tick the models you want. Shift-click ticks a range. The checklist button next to Export selected ticks every model shown.
- Press Export selected.
- Choose the Export folder. It starts out as
game-exportsinside the cache folder; Default goes back to it. The rest of the cache folder, Penumbra's mod folder and the game folder can't be used. - Choose what to include:
- Materials, plus the IMC file that picks gear and weapon variants. Every material variant adds the other dye and colour versions.
- Textures, as the game stores them. (Many models can mean many gigabytes.)
- Skeleton files: the race's body skeleton and the hair, face, headgear or top skeleton the model uses.
-
Decoded skeletons: a readable
.skeleton.jsonnext to each skeleton set. Large exports take a minute.
- Press Export N models. It runs in the background and can be cancelled from the status strip.
Files are written at their game paths under the folder, so a file several models use is written once. A manifest,
instant-edit-export-<date>-<time>.json, lists every model with its race, IDs, item names, materials, textures and
skeleton files, and anything that couldn't be exported. Open folder and Open manifest appear when it's done.
- Choose Hair and keep Player races (and Player-selectable only).
- Press the checklist button to tick every shown model.
- Export selected, tick what you need, and press Export.
With Automatic cache cleanup on (Settings > Cache), exported files in the cache's
game-exports folder are removed after 7 days without being exported again. Choose a folder outside the cache
to keep your exports.
