CSI motion

(Beta). CSI motion detection runs only in the Beta firmware.

The node alerts when something moves nearby, even through a wall. It reads the change in Wi-Fi signals that a moving body causes. It needs ongoing Wi-Fi traffic in the area, and it detects movement, not a person standing still.

CSI motion detection

How it works

Wi-Fi signals bounce around a room off walls, furniture, and people. A person moving through the room changes how those signals arrive at the node. The node measures that change on the Wi-Fi frames it already hears and raises an alert when the change is large enough for long enough. It does not transmit, so it is passive.

Start

  • Web UI: Scan tab → CSI Motion Detection → Start Scan.
  • Over mesh: @ALL CSI_MOTION_START:0:FOREVER runs until @ALL STOP.

Sensitivity

Sensitivity Behavior
Low (default) Fewest false alarms. Two transmitters must agree
Medium One transmitter is enough
High One transmitter, with a lower trigger and shorter dwell. Alerts sooner, expect false alarms

Set it with @AH01 CSI_CFG:SENSITIVITY=LOW (or MEDIUM, HIGH, or a number). @AH01 CSI_RECAL returns to the default.

If it alerts in an empty room

Turn on Per-packet score to serial, note the highest sig value with the room empty, and set the trigger level slightly above it. If the empty-room and walking scores overlap, move the node.

Warning

If you turn off Listen only, never transmit, the node sends Wi-Fi probe requests when traffic is low. Anyone nearby can see them.

On a C5 board

A C5 separates movement from background less cleanly than an S3, and its trigger scale is different. Do not copy a trigger value between the two boards. See DIGI C5 for how to set the trigger on a C5.
