Drone Remote ID

Luke Switzer edited this page Oct 26, 2026 · 1 revision

The node reads drone Remote ID broadcasts in the FAA, EASA, and French formats. It reports the drone's ID, the operator's location, and flight data to the mesh and to /drones.jsonl on the SD card.

How it works

Many drones are required to broadcast a Remote ID message that carries the aircraft's ID, its position and altitude, its speed and heading, and the operator's location. The node listens for these messages and records each drone it hears.

It listens for Wi-Fi Remote ID on channel 6. It reads Bluetooth 4 broadcasts, but not Bluetooth 5 long range.

Start

  • Web UI: Scan tab → Drone RID Detection → Start Scan.
  • Over mesh: @ALL DRONE_START:300 listens for 300 seconds.

Reading the results

Each drone shows its UAV ID, type, signal strength, altitude, speed, heading, and the operator's location when the drone broadcasts it. A drone that broadcasts no position shows n/a for location but still reports its ID and flight data.

Note

Reception of broadcast Remote ID is permitted in most places, but acting on it may not be. See the legal disclaimer. Receiving a Remote ID is not permission to approach or interfere with an aircraft or its operator.

If no drones appear

The node reads Wi-Fi Remote ID only on channel 6, where the standard places it. A drone that uses Bluetooth 5 long range is not read. A drone with Remote ID turned off, or one older than the requirement, does not broadcast at all.
