Navidrome Smart Playlists

Navidrome has its own smart playlist format: .nsp files that Navidrome evaluates and refreshes itself. naviList gives that format a point-and-click editor, so you don't have to write the JSON by hand.

This is different from a naviList rules playlist. A rules playlist is built by naviList and pushed to Navidrome. A smart playlist is a file that Navidrome reads, so Navidrome keeps it up to date.

One-time setup

naviList writes the .nsp files to a folder, and Navidrome has to read that same folder.

  1. Mount a shared folder into both containers.
  2. In Navidrome, set PlaylistsPath (or ND_PLAYLISTSPATH) to where it sees that folder.
  3. In naviList, open Settings, find NSP Playlists and set Output path to where naviList sees the folder, for example /nsp.

For example, naviList:

    volumes:
      - ./nsp:/nsp

and Navidrome:

    volumes:
      - ./music:/music:ro
      - ./nsp:/music/playlists
    environment:
      - ND_PLAYLISTSPATH=/music/playlists

The environment variable NL_NSP_PATH can set the output path on first start.

Making one

  1. Click + New Playlist, choose Navidrome Smart Playlist and click Continue.
  2. Name it.
  3. Click + Add condition and set up each condition. All conditions must match. Use the Any of condition type when you want OR logic inside a group.
  4. Under Sort & Limit, choose how the playlist is sorted (random, ascending or descending) and how many tracks it holds. The limit can be a number of tracks, a percentage, or unlimited.
  5. Click Preview JSON to see the generated .nsp file.
  6. Click Save Playlist.

The file is written to the output path. Navidrome picks it up and the playlist appears in Navidrome.

Good to know

  • Because Navidrome evaluates it, the playlist updates on Navidrome's schedule, not naviList's. naviList's Auto-Refresh doesn't apply.
  • None of naviList's other rule features apply either: no blocks, shares, Popularity or Studio and Live. A smart playlist only does what Navidrome's format can do.
  • A smart playlist shows in the Playlists list with an NSP type, and can be edited or deleted from there.
  • If a playlist doesn't appear in Navidrome, the usual cause is that Navidrome and naviList aren't looking at the same folder. Check both paths. See FAQ and Troubleshooting.
