FAQ
Is this the official ntfy app? No. NtfyBar is an independent open-source client and is not affiliated with ntfy.
Do I need an account? No. NtfyBar has no account. ntfy.sh topics need none either. Your own server may.
Where is my data stored?
In ~/Library/Application Support/NtfyBar/: config.json (topics, servers, credentials), rules.json, state.json and history.sqlite. The folder is readable only by you and the files are mode 600. Plugin data is in the same folder.
Is the history encrypted? No. It is a plaintext SQLite file, protected only by file permissions. Use FileVault for disk encryption.
Does NtfyBar send anything anywhere? No telemetry, analytics or update checks. It connects only to the servers you configure, and to plugin marketplaces when you press Refresh or Install.
What happens while my Mac sleeps?
The stream stops. When the Mac wakes or the network returns, NtfyBar reconnects and asks the server for everything since the last message it saw (since=). It can only get what the server still caches (12 hours on ntfy.sh). Missed messages become one summary notification.
Why is there no auto-update?
NtfyBar never contacts anyone you did not configure. Update with brew upgrade --cask ntfybar.
Can plugins use the network? No. Plugins cannot use the network, run commands or read your clipboard or files. See Permissions.
Does it support WebSocket? Not yet. It is on the roadmap. NtfyBar uses ntfy's JSON stream.
Are attachments downloaded? Only when you ask: the popup's Download / Copy file buttons, or the topic's Also › Download attachments option (files over 100 MB are skipped).
Send Test Message shows nothing on my Mac.
That is expected. NtfyBar ignores the echo of its own messages (so a rule that publishes can't loop), so the test message shows on your other devices — your phone — but not here. To see how a topic's plan looks on this Mac, send a message from another device or with curl -H "Priority: 5" -d "test" ntfy.sh/<your topic>.
Can I use more than one server? Yes. See Self-hosted servers.
Is it free? Yes, MIT licensed. If it helps you, you can support it on Ko-fi.
Yes. Edit config.json or rules.json in ~/Library/Application Support/NtfyBar/ (Settings › General › Edit Config File… / Edit Rules File…). Since 1.1.1 NtfyBar picks up the change within 2 seconds, no restart. Keep each existing topic's id, so its history stays attached. A file that isn't valid JSON is ignored and NtfyBar keeps its current settings until the file is fixed.
Settings › Topics › select it › Remove Topic… at the bottom of the editor (or the − under the list). Its message history is deleted too.
