Troubleshooting

Notifications do not show

  • Check System Settings › Notifications › NtfyBar and allow notifications. Settings › General shows the state.
  • Check that the topic has notification turned on, that you are not paused, and that quiet hours are not active.
  • A build started with swift run cannot notify (no bundle identifier). Run the packaged app from /Applications. See Building from source.

macOS blocks the app on first launch

NtfyBar releases are self-signed with a stable identity, so permissions survive updates (not notarized, so first launch still needs Open Anyway). Right-click it in /Applications and choose Open, or run:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/NtfyBar.app"

"Sign-in failed"

The server answered 401 or 403. NtfyBar stops reconnecting until you change something in Settings › Servers. Check the username and password or token, and that the account may read the topic. Save, and it connects again.

"Server redirects"

The server answered with a redirect. NtfyBar does not follow it and stops until you edit the server. Enter the final https URL in Settings › Servers.

A self-hosted http server does not connect

  • Use the exact URL and port, for example http://192.168.1.5:8080.
  • Allow Local Network for NtfyBar in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.
  • Prefer https. See Self-hosted servers.

A plugin is stuck in "Review and Enable…"

A new plugin, or a local folder plugin, needs your consent first. Click Review and Enable…, read the permissions and choose Allow and Enable. If you cancel, the plugin stays off.

A plugin was disabled after timeouts

A plugin call may run for 1 second. After three timeouts the plugin is disabled. Fix the plugin if it is yours, then press Reload Plugins in Settings › Plugins › Sources.

I missed messages while the Mac slept

NtfyBar fetches them after waking, up to the server's cache window (12 hours on ntfy.sh). They arrive as one "N messages while away" notification. See the FAQ.

Read the logs

/usr/bin/log show --info --last 15m --predicate 'subsystem == "com.padina.ntfybar"'

Topic names are private in the logs. For plugin errors only:

/usr/bin/log show --last 10m --predicate 'subsystem == "com.padina.ntfybar" AND category == "plugins"'

Still stuck

Open an issue. Do not paste real topic names, tokens or server addresses.
