Cooking Pit
Cooking Pit allows boiling and cooking material prior to pottery.
To construct a Cooking Pit a hole in the ground needs to be lined with an insulating material. The following materials can be used to insulate a Cooking Pit:
- Hide
- Clay
| Lining | Required Material | Construction Time | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hide | Hide Bag (reusable) | Instant | 2000 | Only Fresh Water |
| Clay | 25 balls of clay | Several hours | 5000 | Any fluid |
While hide lined Cooking pit allows quick fresh water boiling, such as wet-rendering fats and making glue, a clay lined Cooking pit can function as an earth vat type container used to process material in any fluid including liming and tanning hides.
To create a hide lined Cooking Pit, dig a hole in the ground and then Right click the bottom while sneaking and holding a Hide Vessel. If the Hide vessel contains fresh water, the created Cooking Pit will be filled with fresh water. More fluid can be added up to the maximum of 2000 mB.
The hide bag looses durablity while cooking and also when it is left in the ground for a long time. Consider deconstructing a hide lined Cooking Pit when cooking is complete and dry the Hide Vessel on a Drying Rack to prevent unnecessary damage.
When a hide lined Cooking Pit is deconstructed, any fresh water inside is spilled away.
To create a clay lined Cooking Pit, dig a hole in the ground and the Right click the bottom while sneaking and holding 25 balls of clay. The hole becomes a drying Clay Cooking Pit.
Completed unfired Clay cooking pit will start drying. Drying time depends environmental humidity which can be affected by nearby firepit.
Completely dried Clay lined Cooking Pit is ready for use.
The following types of Cooking Pot recipes are available also for cooking in a Hide lined Cooking Pit:
- Boiling material in fresh water at LOW temperature
- Solidifying fluid
- Soaking material in fluid
Clay lined Cooking Pit is able to handle more Cooking recipes and also several Soaking and Barrel recipes:
- Boiling material in any fluid at LOW or MID temperature
- Dissolving material in fluid
- Solidifying fluid
- Soaking material in fluid
Cooking Pit uses glowing hot Stones, heated in a fire pit, and thrn dropped inside the fluid, as a heat source.
One hot stone brings the boiling temperature to LOW for one hour. Putting two or more stones quickly one after other raises the temperature to MID (if the lining material of the Cooking Pit allows it) and does not extend the boiling time beyond one hour. This means that attention and several hot stones might be needed to complete a recipe.
Right click the Cooking Pit with empty hand to retrieve any heating Stones when the temperature goes down. If there is an item stack placed inside the Cooking Pit, make sure to right click the edge to avoid picking it up instead.
- The trick of using hot stones as a heat source for cooking is called Stone Boling.
- Clay lined Cooking Pit will be used to perform dry destilation.
- Tallow can be made in a Cooking Pit using the wet rendering method.
