Cameras

From 0.7.0 you can share your camera with the people in your voice channel and see theirs, without leaving Mumcord. Cameras are Epic 4.1 (camera sharing). Nothing is installed or changed on the Mumble server. Official Mumble clients see nothing.

What you need

  • A server whose community relay allows cameras. Cameras always go through the relay; there is no direct connection and no camera without a relay.
  • A client certificate, and a peer-to-peer setting that allows the relay (not "Direct only" or "Off", see Settings > Privacy & Connections).
  • You must be in a voice channel. Only Mumcord users in the same channel can see your camera.

When camera sharing is not possible, the camera button and the Apps menu entry are disabled and say why: no relay, relay too old, relay does not allow cameras, peer-to-peer mode without the relay, no client certificate, or not in a voice channel.

Turning your camera on

  • Use the camera button in the user panel (next to mute and deafen), Turn on camera in the Apps menu, or the global camera hotkey.
  • A preview opens first. Nobody sees you until you press Turn on camera. Only people in your channel see your camera, and Mumcord never records cameras.
  • While the camera is on, the button is red, "Camera on" shows under your name, a red camera icon shows next to your name in the channel tree (others with their camera on get one too), and the tray icon gets a red camera badge with a Turn off camera menu entry. Screen readers hear "Your camera is on" and "Your camera is off".
  • The camera also turns off when you change channel, switch server, disconnect or quit, and optionally when your screen locks (Settings > Camera).

The camera room

When people in your channel turn on their cameras, they appear above the chat in the camera room:

  • A grid of up to 9 cameras per channel, or Speaker layout (one large tile, the others below).
  • Each tile shows the name, a microphone-off icon, and a green frame while the person talks. A weak connection shows an "fps" badge. Hovering a tile shows the resolution and codec, such as "720p · AV1".
  • Your own camera is a mirrored self-view marked "Live". You can hide it for yourself.
  • The room bar shows how many cameras are on, who is in the channel without a camera, "Relay · end-to-end encrypted", the layout switch, Pop out (own window) and Close room.
  • Next to a screen share or watch party, the cameras become a strip beside or above the picture, or are hidden (then they are not downloaded).
  • Per tile (the tile's menu): Pin for me, Show large, Hide video, and Quality for me (Auto, Data saver up to 15 fps, Best up to 720p at 30 fps). Hidden videos are not downloaded at all, and only you see these choices.

Cameras are sent once to the relay and copied to viewers, end-to-end encrypted. The relay cannot see the picture. Limits: 9 cameras per channel, up to 720p at 30 fps.

Backgrounds

In the preview you choose Background:

  • None
  • Blur with strength Light or Strong
  • Image: pick one of the 18 built-in backgrounds (Library) or add your own (Yours: PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 10 MB)

Effects run on your computer (graphics card or CPU); the preview shows the load (low, medium, high). Your own images stay on your device and only the finished picture is sent. If your PC is too busy for an effect, Mumcord says so and you can choose None. Tick Use this background next time to keep your choice as default.

While the camera is on you can change the background on the fly, with Background in the room bar or in your own tile's menu, without stopping the camera.

Settings

Settings > Camera has a live preview, camera choice, send quality, mirrored self-view, default background, blur strength, effect quality, Manage images, "Turn my camera off when my screen locks", and how you see other people's cameras (Always, When I open the room, Never, data saver, reduce motion).

Notices

  • Camera stopped notices appear when something ends your camera: another app is using it, it was disconnected, it sends unreadable pictures, or the relay is not reachable. Press Dismiss to close the notice.
  • If the relay itself ends it: "Camera stopped by the server's relay".
