Equipment and Items

Alkatraz features a data-driven magic item system with equipment slots, components, modifiers, and trigger-based engravings.

Equipment Slots

Alkatraz supports 11 equipment slots -- 6 vanilla and 5 virtual:

Slot Type Description
Main Hand Vanilla Wand or weapon
Off Hand Vanilla Shield, scroll, or secondary item
Head Vanilla Helmet
Chest Vanilla Chestplate or robe
Legs Vanilla Leggings
Feet Vanilla Boots
Body Virtual Body armor / robe layer
Ring Virtual Accessory slot
Necklace Virtual Accessory slot
Bracelet Virtual Accessory slot
Pendant Virtual Accessory slot

Virtual Slots

Ring, Necklace, Bracelet, and Pendant are virtual slots not backed by vanilla inventory. Manage them via:

/alkatraz equipment

The Equipment Menu shows 4 virtual slots. Click an empty slot, then click an equipment item in your inventory to equip it. Right-click a filled slot to unequip.

Item Types

Magic items are categorized by component type:

Component Description Examples
wand Channeling tool for spellcasting Wooden Wand, Reinforced Wand
mana_container Provides mana pool Included in all wands
socket_holder Supports engravings Reinforced Wand, higher-tier items
scroll Single-use spell item Scroll items
grimoire Spell reference / lectern item Grimoire items

Equipment Categories

Essential tools for casting spells. Wands determine spell power, max circle, cast time, and elemental affinities. Tiered from basic wooden wands to powerful elemental wands.

Virtual-slot equipment (ring, pendant, necklace, bracelet) organized into element families. Each family has multiple tiers with increasing power, from basic jewelry to legendary artifacts.

Leather-based magical robes and boots worn in vanilla armor slots. Four sets: Apprentice, Scholar, Enchanter, and Archmage, each providing mana bonuses and set bonuses.

Spell books used with lecterns. Each grimoire stores spells and provides stat bonuses similar to wands, with a page count for spell storage.

Single-use consumable items that cast a specific spell when used. Equipped in the off-hand slot.

Attributes

Magic items can have custom attributes beyond vanilla Minecraft stats:

Attribute Description
spell_power Multiplies spell damage/effectiveness
max_mana Increases maximum mana pool
mana_regeneration Increases mana regen rate
fire_affinity Adds fire spell damage
water_affinity Adds water spell damage
earth_affinity Adds earth spell damage
air_affinity Adds air spell damage
light_affinity Adds light spell damage
dark_affinity Adds dark spell damage
magic_affinity Adds magic spell damage

Attributes are sourced from:

  1. The item's base definition
  2. Applied modifiers / engravings
  3. Set bonuses (when wearing a full set)

Set Bonuses

Wearing a complete set of matching equipment grants bonus effects. Set bonuses activate at 2-piece and 4-piece thresholds. See individual category pages for specific set bonus details.

Arcane Table

Right-click any Enchanting Table to open a choice menu with two options:

  • Arcane Table -- Opens the Alkatraz hub with Research Library, Magic Engineering (engravings), and Progression
  • Enchanting Table -- Opens the vanilla enchanting table GUI

This lets one block serve both the Alkatraz arcane system and vanilla enchanting. See Arcane Table for details.

Imbuing

Imbuing converts a vanilla tool, weapon, or armor piece into a magic item by infusing it with Magic Stones in a crafting grid. Imbued items keep their vanilla material and durability, gain an "Imbued" prefix in their name, and become usable in the Engraving Table.

How to Imbue

  1. Obtain Magic Stones (dropped by magic mobs, or bought from librarian villagers).
  2. Place 1 vanilla item + N Magic Stones in a crafting grid (shapeless recipe).
  3. The result is the same item, now imbued.

The stone cost depends on the item's tier, determined by its material:

Tier Materials Stone Cost
1 Wooden, Leather, Golden 1
2 Stone, Chainmail 2
3 Iron, Bow 3
4 Diamond, Crossbow, Trident 4
5 Netherite, Turtle Helmet 5

Tier 1 requires 2 total items, so it can be crafted in the player's 2x2 inventory grid; higher tiers (5-6 items) require a crafting table.

Imbued Item Tiers

Each tier corresponds to an item definition that grants mana when equipped:

Definition Max Mana
alkatraz:imbued_tier1 +10
alkatraz:imbued_tier2 +25
alkatraz:imbued_tier3 +50
alkatraz:imbued_tier4 +75
alkatraz:imbued_tier5 +100

Imbued items can hold 1 engraving by default. The stone costs are configurable under imbuing.stone_costs in config.yml (see Configuration).

Note: Imbue recipes are plain Bukkit recipes and do not appear in the /recipes Recipe Manager. Giving an alkatraz:imbued_tierN item via /alkatraz give produces a placeholder barrier item -- real imbuing happens through the crafting recipe.
