Getting Assets

In order to get started with importing Project Zomboid assets onto the rig, there are a few things you need to make sure of first.

Make sure that:

  • Project Zomboid (B42) is installed
  • The DirectX Importer by SaintBaron is installed
    • https://extensions.blender.org/add-ons/io-directx-x/
    • Last confirmed working version is 1.3.1 (but newer versions may work just as well)
    • The rig will check if you have the add on installed from the extensions platform (recommended) or locally. Make sure it is enabled!

To have Blender parse all of the assets we need:

  1. Go to the Properties Editor
  2. Open the 'Scene' tab
  3. Expand the 'Zomboid Assets' panel
  4. In the 'Directories' subpanel, put in your Project Zomboid Steam install location.
    1. In Steam, click 'Manage Game' on Project Zomboid in your library.
    2. Go to 'Local Files'
    3. Click 'Browse'
    4. The directory it opens up to is the directory that you need to put in the 'Project Zomboid Directory' path back in Blender
  5. Make sure that you don't have any mod directories used yet; that's an advanced topic for later.
  6. In the 'Assets' subpanel, click on 'Parse All Assets'
    1. This will take a moment depending on your machine specs. Blender hasn't crashed!

Note

Be aware that the data for the parsed assets is stored on the Blender scene. Meaning, if you are using multiple Blender scenes inside of the same file, you will have to do this process for each scene.

Once these steps are complete, you can begin using the 'Model' panel in the rig UI.
