FAQ
Many changes only apply to new wars. Difficulty tiers, AI tech, and personalities are read afresh at every battle, so those do reach a war in progress, but the galaxy, its systems, and the cards already dealt do not change.
Bosses and contesting factions use shared armies, so one army holds several Commanders. See Game Modes.
Galactic War hides economy modifiers from the player list. The bounties are still awarded, and yours shows below your economy bar.
The war ends the moment the last boss falls, even while other enemy systems remain. There is no walk back through the galaxy. One exception: if the treasure planet still hides a loadout you have not unlocked, you are offered a chance to take it first. A defeated boss's systems pass to whichever faction was contesting them, and a system taken by a contesting faction falls when that faction's boss is defeated.
Without Hardcore you are moved back to the system you came from, with every card you held. Attack again when you are ready. With Hardcore the war is over. See Playing a War.
Sub Commanders ignore difficulty: they have a normal economy and play cautiously on every tier. Three cards make them better. See Commander and Sub Commander Tech.
No. The tier is chosen when the war is created. A balance update to a named tier does reach a war in progress.
The Queller brain, Epic and larger galaxies, and deep systems with many armies all need more CPU and RAM. Choose the Titans brain or a smaller galaxy on a slower PC.
No. GWO needs Planetary Annihilation: TITANS.
In the Galactic War Overhaul panel on the galaxy map. Game Options explains how to reuse it.
With the Hardcore option on, the in-game menu offers Abandon War in place of Surrender, and there is no restarting a lost battle. Without it, the menu offers Surrender and Continue War.
Yes. A war remembers the race mods and add-ons it was created with. A missing race mod or map pack blocks Fight until it is enabled again, and a disabled add-on shows a warning on resume. See Races and Add-ons.
Paratrooper, Nomad, and Rapid Deployment depend on MLA units and cannot be used by another race. From the next release, neither can Artillery, Space Excavation, Tactical Nuke, Planetary Excavation, or Defense Tech, whose changes reach only MLA units. See Loadouts.
Badges are not earned on Custom difficulty, with developer mode on, or in a co-op war with more players than it was scaled for. See Difficulty.
- Enemy Cluster Worker and Security commanders use the Angel and Colonel icons. This is a base-game bug.
- The player and planet lists show MLA commander icons whatever the race. This is a base-game bug.
- Some loadouts are disabled for races other than MLA because of unit dependencies.
- Bugs and Exiles are not dealt some tech cards for MLA units they have access to.
