The terms this wiki uses, in alphabetical order.
- Add-on: a unit mod that adds units to a race rather than being a race of its own: Second Wave, Section 17, or Osmech. See Races and Add-ons.
- AI player: from the next release, an AI that the host of a co-op war puts into an empty slot, and that plays beside the players. See Co-op.
- Allied Commander: an AI Commander from your faction who joins you in one system and fights on your side. It is marked ALLY in Planetary Intelligence. See Game Modes.
- Army: one player in a battle. An army usually has one Commander, but a shared army has several.
- Available Tech: the card already dealt to a system you can move to. It is shown in Planetary Intelligence and joins the offer when you explore that system. See Tech Cards.
- Badge: the mark a loadout earns in the Commander picker when you win a war with it. See Difficulty.
- Boss: the leader of an enemy faction, on its home system. The war ends when the last boss falls. See Factions.
- Brain: the AI program that plays an army: Titans, Queller, or Penchant. See AI Brains.
- Contesting faction: a second enemy faction in a system, which fights you and the main enemy faction alike. A system with one is an FFA system. See Game Modes.
- Data bank: a place in your inventory that holds one card. See Tech Cards.
- Deck: the set of tech cards a war can deal, picked with the Techs dropdown. See Tech Cards.
- Distance: how many jumps a system is from your starting system. Enemy strength, AI tech, and many card weights grow with it.
- Economy: how fast an army gathers resources, compared with yours. An economy of 1.0 matches yours, and 2.0 is twice yours. See Difficulty.
- Faction: the side an army fights for: Legonis Machina, Foundation, Synchronous, Revenants, or Cluster. A faction is not a set of units. That is the race. See Factions.
- FFA system: a system with more than one enemy faction, where every army fights every other. See Game Modes.
- The Guardians: the defenders of the treasure planet, armed with your own tech. See Loadouts.
- Hardcore: the game option that ends the war when you lose a battle. See Game Options.
- Loadout: the starting card you pick for a war, which decides what you can build at first. See Loadouts.
- MLA: the base game's own units, the race every war uses unless a race mod is installed.
- Personality: how an AI Commander plays: how soon it attacks, how many fabbers it keeps, and what it builds. See AI Brains.
- Race: the set of units an army builds: MLA, or Legion, Bugs, or Exiles from a server mod. See Races and Add-ons.
- Retinue: the Sub Commanders you field.
- Shared army: one army led by several Commanders. It has more build power and more lives than an ordinary army. Bosses and contesting factions use them. See Game Modes.
- Sub Commander: an AI Commander from your faction who lands beside you in every battle. See Commander and Sub Commander Tech.
- T2 access: holding a card that lets you build advanced factories. See Tech Cards.
- Threat Level: Planetary Intelligence's estimate of how strong the enemy in a system is. See Planetary Intelligence.
- Treasure planet: the one system in every war that offers a loadout you have not yet unlocked. See Loadouts.
- Weight: how often a card is offered compared with the other cards on offer. Higher weight means more often. See Tech Cards.
