Races and Add ons

Races and Add-ons

A race is a unit faction from a server mod: Legion, Bugs, or Exiles. With the right mods installed you can fight a war as one, and every enemy faction fields one too. Add-ons are unit packs that extend a race.

Requirements

Races need the GW Server Mods mod plus the race's own server mod. Without GW Server Mods there is no Race picker and every war is MLA.

Choosing your race

The Race picker on the war setup screen (tooltip "The units you and your Sub Commanders field. Each race's AI is picked with the AI button.") sets the units you and your Sub Commanders use. Your tech cards apply to your race's units by matching each card to the units of the same kind and tier. From the next release, combat units, defences, and superweapons are also matched by job, such as anti-air, artillery, or scout: a card for the Stinger, an anti-air bot, changes Legion's anti-air Patriot and none of its other bots, and a card for the Laser Defense Tower changes the race's turrets but not its walls, mines, or artillery. Basic artillery comes from Artillery Tech and advanced defences from Advanced Defense Technology, as for MLA. A race unit whose job no vanilla unit of its kind has is matched to some of that kind's other vanilla units. Choosing Cluster as your faction locks the race to MLA.

Enemy races

The enemy pool is every installed race plus MLA. Disable a race mod to keep it out of a war. The Unique Races game option stops enemy factions sharing a race with you or with each other until every race in play has been used. Each race is fought by the AI brain that knows it.

Races

Race Commanders Brains Notes
Legion Overwatch, Cyclops, Cataphract, Raptor, Quad, Tank Titans, Queller Every card in the Basic deck applies to Legion units. The Galactic War Overhaul deck's Upgrade Tech cards do not exist for Legion
Bugs Bug Alpha Commander Titans Research factories and their unlocks work as in a skirmish. Nothing is withheld beyond the MLA-only cards and loadouts. Known issue: some cards for MLA units Bugs can access are not dealt
Exiles Maxim, Blueberry, Brainiac Titans Exiles field no orbital unit beyond the launcher, so every orbital card is withheld, plus the MLA-only cards and loadouts. Known issue: some cards for MLA units Exiles can access are not dealt. From the next release, Taurus is not offered: the current Exiles release does not include it

MLA only: Protocol: Kill-switch, Planetary Radar Tech, every Upgrade Tech card except Commander Upgrade Tech and the three Sub Commander techs, and the Paratrooper, Nomad, and Rapid Deployment loadouts. From the next release, the Artillery, Space Excavation, Tactical Nuke, Planetary Excavation, and Defense Tech loadouts are MLA only too.

Add-ons

Add-on What it brings to Galactic War
Second Wave 23 MLA units, 15 Legion units, and 6 Bugs units. The AI fields them too
Section 17 MLA units, and for Legion the Ligma, Ægir, and gantry with its four exclusives: Big Bill, Pineapple, Floater, and Horntail
Osmech 45 MLA units, many of them titans. Osmech ships no AI data, so only players field them

An add-on's units arrive with the vanilla unit of the same kind (from the next release, combat units are also matched by job): unlock the vanilla unit and the add-on's equivalents come with it. A Legion or Bugs player's card tooltips name the add-on units that race receives.

Missing mods

A war remembers the race mods and add-ons it was created with.

  • A missing race mod blocks Fight, and the Galactic War Overhaul panel lists it under Missing Races. Enable it again to continue.
  • A missing map pack blocks Fight the same way, under Missing Map Packs.
  • A disabled add-on shows a warning when the war is resumed. The war continues without its units.
