Essential Info & Tips

Tip

Mastering the Set: Passwords

If you plan to master the entire set, it is highly recommended to keep a record of passwords at several points throughout the game, especially before attempting the challenge achievements. In RetroAchievements Hardcore Mode, retrying these challenges can otherwise be very time-consuming, as there are no save states. You don't necessarily have to use your own passwords, passwords shared by other players or available online work just as well.

Note

Terminology: Adventure Mode - Action Mode

The guide will often refer to Adventure Mode and Action Mode.

SpellCaster - Adventure Mode Preview
Adventure Mode refers to the screen (above), where the player interacts with the world and characters via dialogue, text and various actions.

SpellCaster - Action Mode Preview

Action Mode refers to the screen (above), where the player progresses through a horizontal side-scroller, fighting enemies, bosses and dodging obstacles.

Title (dev_id) Guidance & Insights

Just a Stroll

a_ClgEnrikuTemple

Achievement badge icon
Reach Enriku Temple without taking damage.

Starting from Summit Temple, MOVE to Mt.Enriku. Then progress all the way through this Action Mode sequence until you get to Enriku Temple. The enemies within this area are very easy to deal with. Doing this part hitless is pretty easy.

If all else fails, the player could just spam some overpowered spell.

Fail Conditions

- Player dies
- Player takes a hit
If any fail condition is met, the player can easily retry the achievement by dying and then choosing to CONTINUE instead of BREAK. The player then respawns back at the start of the Action Mode sequence.

Achievement Tracking

- A Trigger Indicator is displayed when the player starts the Action level from the beginning. It is removed when any fail condition is met.

Swift Revelation

a_ClgIzumoShrine

Achievement badge icon
Reach Izumo Temple and defeat the mysterious man within 1 minute and 45 seconds. The timer only counts while in Action Mode.

MOVE to Izumo Shrine. Then progress all the way through this Action Mode sequence until reaching Izumo Shrine. At the destination, start the bossfight and defeat the mysterious man. The achievement pops when he's vanquished.

If all else fails, the player could just spam some overpowered spell.

Fail Conditions

- Player exceeds the time limit
If any fail condition is met, the player can easily retry the achievement by dying and then choosing to CONTINUE instead of BREAK. Way of the Spirit

a_ClgAttaroShrine

Achievement badge icon
Reach Attaro Shrine and defeat the warden using only fully charged Ki attacks and no more than 3 'Makiri' casts.

MOVE to Attaro Shrine to begin tracking this achievement. The achievement unlocks when the boss is defeated.

The achievement pops when the boss dies.

As you progress through the Action Mode sequence, only use fully charged Ki attacks and try to avoid using 'Makiri' whenever possible. Ideally, save at least 2 'Makiri' casts for the boss fight, as defeating Jukak using only fully charged Ki attacks is significantly more difficult without them.

During the fight, keep your distance by flying around the arena and dodging Jukak's leap attacks. Fire fully charged Ki attacks whenever he jumps toward you.

Be wary: 'Makiri' only lasts for 30 seconds, but its effect ends immediately if you are hit while it is active. Saving two casts for the boss fight makes this challenge considerably easier.

Fail Conditions

- Player uses a non-fully-charged Ki attack.
The challenge automatically resets when dying during the Action level prior to reaching Attaro Shrine, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying. If the player fails the challenge during the bossfight, the best method to retry is by using a password which puts the player back at a point before moving to Attaro Shrine.

Achievement Tracking

- A Trigger Indicator is displayed when the player starts the Action level from the beginning.
- A Measured Indicator tracks the amount of 'Makiri' casts left to be used up to 3.

a_ClgMtMiwa

Achievement badge icon
Reach the top of Mt. Miwa and defeat both guardians using no more than 50 ENGY. The 'Fudo' and 'Kannon' spells are disallowed.

Acquiring the Fake Sword and showing it to Daikok, MOVE to Mt. Miwa to begin tracking this achievement. The achievement unlocks when Wakahiko, the 2nd boss at Miwa Temple, is defeated.

The tip would be to try out the different allowed spells and see what works best to defeat the bosses, some of damage spells work really well. So save your ENGY for the bossfights, since the path to Miwa Temple is rather simple to navigate.

Fail Conditions

- Player casts a disallowed spell
- Player exceeds ENGY limit.
The challenge automatically resets when dying during the boss fight against first boss at Miwa Gate, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying. If the player fails the challenge during any latter part, the best method to retry is by using a password which puts the player back at a point before starting the fight at Miwa Gate.

The challenge automatically resets when dying during the Action level prior to reaching Kashima Shrine, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying. - A Trigger Indicator is displayed when the player starts the Action level from the beginning.
- A Measured Indicator tracks the amount of available spell casts left to use.

Mechanical Menace

a_ClgKakogenTemple

Achievement badge icon
Reach Kakogen Temple using only 1 spell cast and suffering no more than 1 hit of damage.

After talking with Utsuho at Kumano Temple, MOVE to Kakogen to begin tracking this achievement.

The main tip would be to not get hit prior to reaching the area with the robots. Then try to navigate through the enemies.

Fail Conditions

- Player casts more than one spell
- Player takes more than one hit
The challenge automatically resets when dying during the Action level prior to reaching Kakogen Temple, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying.

Achievement Tracking

- A Trigger Indicator is displayed when the player starts the Action level from the beginning.

Spirited Dynamism

a_ClgMtHinokami

Achievement badge icon
Reach the top of Mt. Hinokami and defeat the villians without exceeding the ENGY limit of 70. Taking damage restores your allowance and the spell 'Mars' may only be cast once.

After finding the spaceship at Kakogen Temple, return to Ustuho and talk with him to unlock the next area. MOVE to Mt. Hinkokami to begin tracking this achievement.

The main giveaway here would be to make good usage of your available ENGY. I'm pretty sure the player will need to use at least one cast of 'Makiri' to reach the top of the mountain. Then during the bossfights, try to find a good method to defeat each of the two bosses. The hardest one by far is Robot Daikok. Also be aware the player is allowed one cast of 'Mars' which heals them up to max, which in order can be used to regain ENGY allowance.

Fail Conditions

- Player cast 'Mars' more than once
- Player exceeds ENGY allowance
The challenge automatically resets when dying during the Action level prior to reaching the top of the mountain, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying. If the player fails the challenge during the bossfights, the best method to retry is by using a password which puts the player back at a point before moving to Mt. Hinokami Shrine.

Achievement Tracking

- A Trigger Indicator is displayed when the player starts the Action level from the beginning.
- A Measured Indicator tracks the player's ENGY allowance left up to 70. Allowance is regained when taking damage.

The Pyramid's Dash

a_ClgPyramid

Achievement badge icon
Reach and defeat the Pyramid Demon within 8 minutes whilst using no more than 70 ENGY

After defeating the bosses at Mt. Hinokami and activating the spacecraft at Kakogen Temple, it moves the player to the pyramid. Once the player unlocks the main entrance, enter it to start tracking this achievement.

The main tip here would be to make good use of the spells. The bossfight in this case is pretty easy to handle with just basic attacks.
This map documented on GameFAQs may provide help finding the most efficient path up to the bossfight.

Fail Conditions

- Player exceeds the ENGY limit
- Player exceeds the time limit, it only tracks while in Action Mode, in Adventure Mode the timer is halted.
The challenge automatically resets when dying during the Action level prior to reaching the boss, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying. Travel from the Misty Crossing to the Holy Bridge within 2 minutes, using no more than 40 ENGY, taking only 1 hit, and without the spells 'Makiri' or 'Mars'.

After Yomotsu tells the player about the Holy Bridge and visiting Amano about it as well, the Holy Bridge can be entered by moving all the way to the right of the Underworld's Action level. To begin the achievement head back to Misty Crossing, all the way to the left of the Underworld's Action level, and MOVE to Yomotsu from this location to start tracking the achievement.

Again just as the other challenge achievements, try to make good use of any allowed spell in order to travel to the destination in the given time limit.

Fail Conditions

- Player takes more than one hit
- Player exceeds ENGY limit
- Player exceeds time limit
- Player casts a disallowed spell
The challenge automatically resets when dying during the Action level, if the player choses to CONTINUE instead of BREAK after dying. The SpellCaster's Destiny

a_ClgFinalBattle

Achievement badge icon
Defeat the Evil Lord within 5 minutes 20 seconds, using no more than 250 ENGY, never falling below 25 STGH, and without any healing or resurrection.

Main tip would be to only use spells when absolutely necessary during the four mini bosses. The most hardest mini boss would be the third one, which shoots out mini version of himself. Try using some spells here and then save up the rest of the ENGY for the final fight. During the final fight try to focus the large mouths first, then the player can easily 1v1 the boss with any remaining ENGY.
Also make sure to be fully healed up before commiting to the final fight, the player may heal at Izumo Town by eating some food.

Fail Conditions

- Player STGH/HP drops below 25
- Player exceeds ENGY limit
- Player exceeds time limit
- Player uses the 'Mars' spell
- Player is resurrected by Kuma's necklace

Only those fully charged may challenge fate. Accumulate 250 ENGY before the final confrontation.

Simply do a little farming within any Action level, to stock up on some ENGY. The player will probably be doing this naturally in order to progress the story, as some parts pretty much require the player to stock up on some ENGY as they're pretty hard without a good amount of ENGY in reserve.
