Type and format text on your pages. Beta 4 has the core typed notes editor, formatting, styles, and typing helpers. Everything except start-up is untested by hand, so check the test checklist before you rely on a feature.
A page can hold text in two ways. You can place text boxes anywhere on a page, as in OneNote, or stack them in a simple document flow. Each text box is its own editor, so a page can mix several text boxes with ink and images.
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Basic formatting | Built. Headings, bulleted and numbered lists, checkboxes, bold, italic, links, quotes, and callouts. |
| Markdown shortcuts | Built. Type # for a heading and other Markdown patterns, and paste Markdown. |
| Images and attachments | Built. Paste, drag, or pick a file, then resize and crop. Attachments save back with your note. |
| Tables and code blocks | Built. Basic tables and code blocks with syntax highlighting. See Tables and charts for smart tables with formulas. |
| Spell check | Built. Uses the Windows spelling service. Several languages work at once, with a personal dictionary. |
| Text styles | Built. Each text style (Normal, Heading 1-6, Page title, Quote, Code) can have its own font, size, color, and spacing per notebook. |
| Slash menu | Built. Type "/" at the start of a line to insert a block, or use "Turn into" to change one. |
| Outline and headings | Built. Alt+Shift+Up and Alt+Shift+Down move a paragraph with its children, or a heading with its section. |
| Typing helpers | Built. Auto-replace, and Alt+Shift+D, T, and F to insert the date, the time, or both. |
| Paste shortcuts | Built. Paste a web address over selected words to make a link. Broken lines from PDFs are joined. |
| Page templates and series | Built. Start a page from a template, or make one a step in a series. |
| Markdown source view | Built. Show a page as Markdown text that you can edit. |
| Read aloud | Built. Read a page or selection with Windows voices, with each word highlighted. |
| Reading order | Built. See a page's items in the order that screen readers and Tab visit them. |
| Alt text | Built. Describe any image or object, or mark it as decorative. |
| Find and replace | Built. Find text across a page and replace it. |
| Word count and table of contents | Built. Count words and show a table of contents. |
| Extract and embed | Built. Pull out a section into a new page, merge pages, split a page, or embed one page inside another. |
Every automatic change, such as a Markdown shortcut or AutoCorrect, is undone with one Ctrl+Z. Each helper can be turned off in Settings.
- Your typed text is stored as Markdown, so it stays readable outside OpenNote through the
page.mdcopy of each page. - Read aloud never sends text anywhere. It only uses voices already on your PC.
- Ctrl+K adds a link when text is selected, and opens the command palette otherwise.
- Keyboard shortcuts
- Ink and drawing, for mixing handwriting with text
- Accessibility, for reading order and alt text
