Why I Made This
ShadePlay guide › Behind the scenes
Why ShadePlay exists, in the maintainer's own words.
I used NVIDIA's ShadowPlay (Instant Replay in the NVIDIA App) for years, and it kept letting me down:
- It didn't reliably start. Sometimes after booting my PC, Instant Replay just wasn't on, and I only found out after the moment was gone.
- It couldn't get my audio right. I play with the game on my headset, friends on Discord and my mic all at once, and clips kept coming out without the call or without the game sound.
- The NVIDIA App capped my bitrate. Fast motion turned into mush, and I couldn't turn the quality up.
- I wanted more than it offered: native resolution, 240+ fps, HDR and real control over quality.
How ShadePlay was built to fix each of these, problem by problem, including what the AI got wrong along the way: How it was built. ShadePlay was made by baddo together with Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic; Anthropic does not publish, endorse or support ShadePlay.
ShadePlay is an independent project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA; ShadowPlay and GeForce are NVIDIA trademarks.
