Interview with Hanna

UQ Student studying Korean and Japanese

Has your experience with dyslexia, affected your learning experience?

• Yes, tests are difficult because reading takes more time and I sometimes have accidental spelling mistakes because I write the wrong letters different to what they are in my head.

What effect does dyslexia have in your life?

• I know where left is, but not right. I must figure out what left is first before I know where right is.
• I am a slow reader.
• Write letters wrong.
• I have difficulty finding the right words to express my thoughts.

From your point of view, are people aware of this condition?

• Not really, people know of the condition, don’t understand the extent of its impact.

(Explains medium prototype) How would you feel about this dyslexia-based game?

• It looks fun, and I like games.

Would you think that this game could help bring awareness?

• I suppose it could. If not explicitly aware, people can be subconsciously aware because they have experienced what dyslexic people experience.

Do dyslexia have an affect on studying foreign language?

• Yes, especially Korean, as many characters look similar.
• For exampleㄴㄱ and ㅜㅗ as they also have similar pronunciation

How would you simulate dyslexia?

• For reading: Have words change after a time interval from the nonsensical version to the actual word.
• It would be hard to simulate other aspects of dyslexia.
• Typing is fine for me, only writing, but I think it would be educational if certain letters people type get replaced with similar looking letters. Example: if someone types brick, it comes up prick.
