User testing with Medium Fidelity Prototype

Testing with High school students

Context

User Testing was conducted on 3 high school students from various grade levels and schools. User Testing was conducted with the intent of gaining insights only achievable from performing users tests with the intended target demographic. Each high school student provided their grade level and the school they attended but their names were not obtained in order to maintain privacy.

User testing Set-up

Each user was sat down and asked to provide their grade level and high school. They were then given context to the test by the interviewer, who explained what the system is, what problem space is and what the they were going to be doing today. They were then provided with a laptop which has the medium fidelity prototype opened. The interviewer explains the system as the participant navigates their way through the Figma based prototype. They were then asked the following questions related to the system in its current iteration.

  • What did you learn with this experience?
  • Does this system succeed at raising awareness to the burdens of living with dyslexia?
  • How do you feel like your classmates would respond to a system like this?
  • How would you improve this system?

Results

Participant 1

Grade: 11, School: St Aidan's Anglican Girls School

  • What did you learn with this experience? I didn't realise how difficult it was for people living with dyslexia, I always assumed that they struggled but this system helps me visualise how they struggle.
  • Does this system succeed at raising awareness to the burdens of living with dyslexia? I feel like it could, I would be interested in seeing a dyslexic person use this to see how accurate it is.
  • How do you feel like your classmates would respond to a system like this? It's possible that they could learn something from using this, though its more likely that they would not take it seriously.
  • How would you improve this system? I feel like the system needs some way of rewarding the user for going through it, otherwise they might not feel interested.

Participant 2

Grade: 11, School: Ipswich Grammar School

  • What did you learn with this experience? I already know people who have dyslexia so I kind of already understood that they have problems with reading. I suppose this system was interesting in trying to represent that.
  • Does this system succeed at raising awareness to the burdens of living with dyslexia? I feel like it kind of did, I reckon you would need to make it feel more like real-life if its going to make people feel connected.
  • How do you feel like your classmates would respond to a system like this? I doubt that my classmates would be very interested in something like this, its the sort of thing that our teacher would make us do and we wouldn't take very seriously.
  • How would you improve this system? I can't really think of anything big, maybe some method of making high school students more engaged?

Participant 3

Grade: 12, School: Centenary State High school

  • What did you learn with this experience? I already knew kind of how dyslexia worked, but it was informative seeing it being visually simulated
  • Does this system succeed at raising awareness to the burdens of living with dyslexia? I think definitely, it does a really good job of getting the message across.
  • How do you feel like your classmates would respond to a system like this? I think it depends largely on the classmates, some of my class would respond well to it while others would take very little interest.
  • How would you improve this system? Maybe make the text easier to read? The White on blue kind of makes something that's already challenging, more challenging. This is annoying because the reading the text is already a challenge. I'd suggest making it black on white.

Evaluation

The majority of participants were concerned about the level of engagement which high school participants would gain with the system. This is a notable issue though addressing it would require a large amount of time and brainstorming to find a solution. As a result, addressing it in the final prototype is unlikely. The issue of the systems colour scheme on the other hand is an issue that can be easily addressed in the system.

General Testing

A series of tests were also ran on Users inside and outside of the high school demographic. As before, Users were given the problem space and concept. Users were asked questions regarding the Figma prototype.

Would you invite your friends to play this game?

Absolutely. My friends would like that.

How can you make this more social?

Maybe instead of randomly generated passages, two players input a passage which gets simulated and both players will have to correct each other.

How is the aesthetic of the prototype?

I think a bubbly/soft design might look more pleasing. It looks too serious at the moment. I think it would look better if the colours were lighter and softer.

Would you invite your friends to play this game?

No, I don't think my friends are interested.

How can you make this more social?

Make people take tests and they can share on their social media.

Any features you would like to add?

Maybe like a story. You go through a story, and to continue, you have to type in the correct translation of a dyslexic phrase.

How is the aesthetic of the prototype?

Looks good. Simple.

How can you make this more social?

Make it into a facebook game. Like the games you can invite your friends to on messenger.

Any features you would like to add?

Maybe a settings option where you can change the colour theme.

How is the aesthetic of the prototype?

It looks a little boring. Definitely should have attractive animations, also maybe music and sound fx.
