🏒 Organisation chart

People β†’ Organisation shows who reports to whom, from the manager FreeITSM already holds against each person: the one directory sync brings in from LDAP or Entra ID, or the one set by hand in Tickets β†’ Users. Nothing needs setting up, and nothing on it changes a reporting line - those are changed where they always were.

Shipped in 4.8.0. Proposed in #241 and built in PR #242 by vsc55. Developers: Organisation chart - Developer Guide. The review: Organisation chart - PR review.

The questions it answers

  • Who is above this person, all the way to the top?
  • Who is in a director's whole branch?
  • Which managers have left while people still report to them?
  • Who has no manager at all in the directory?

Two views of the same data

View What it shows
Tree (the default) The whole organisation, starting with the people who manage somebody and have nobody above them. Each branch opens one level at a time. Three layouts: Cards, Compact (job title and department in columns) and Columns (one column per level, for deep organisations). Expand all / Collapse all; what is open survives a refresh.
Chart Boxes and lines. The whole organisation from the top or, with somebody chosen: In the organisation - the line from the top down to them, each manager's team beside it, and their own team below - or only Their part.

Find someone opens the tree down to a person. On anyone's page in People, Show in the chart opens it on them.

The chart

  • Levels below the person: three unless you choose another - a few presets, All, or a number of your own (0 means all, 32 at most).
  • At most 150 people in one chart; past that it says where people were left out. A chart bigger than that stops being readable.
  • Compact stacks people with no team of their own under their manager; Left to right turns it sideways, which often suits an image.
  • Zoom with the mouse wheel, drag to move, click the size to go back to 100%.
  • Click somebody to see who they are and how to reach them in the side panel; double-click (or Draw from here) to draw from them; Reports to goes up a level.
  • Dim the others fades everybody but the person chosen.
  • Each department keeps its own colour wherever it appears.

Export

Export saves what the chart shows as an image - PNG, SVG or PDF - or as data - CSV, JSON or XML. The images are drawn from the data, not screenshots, so they are sharp at any size.

Gaps

The sidebar's Gaps lists:

  • Leavers who still manage people - their reports need a new manager in the directory.
  • No manager in the directory - current people a directory keeps up to date, with no manager and nobody under them. People typed in by hand are left out: customers often have no manager, and that is not a gap.

Both are worth fixing at the source, in the directory.

Leavers

Hidden unless you tick Show leavers - except a leaver who still has people reporting to them, who is always shown, marked, because hiding them would hide the gap.

Who sees what

Only people in the companies you can access, exactly as on the People list. A manager in a company you cannot access is never named: the people under them start a branch of their own, as if they had no manager. Anyone with access to People can open the chart.
