VOR and Radial/DME

NavAid includes Israeli VOR/DME stations as a reference overlay and can compute magnetic radial + DME from a selected reference VOR to any route point.

The data lives in docs/data/vor.json. Station identifiers, names and types come from the IAA eAIP radio-navigation list; frequencies and approximate antenna coordinates come from the OurAirports navaid dataset, with RAM filled from a NOTAM-level coordinate. Always verify current official eAIP data for operational use.

Controls

In the View section:

Control What it does
Show VOR stations Shows or hides the VOR/DME station markers on the map.
VOR ref Selects the reference VOR used for radial/DME readouts. This selector stays available even when station markers are hidden.

The two controls are intentionally separate:

  • Show VOR stations only controls map markers.
  • VOR ref controls radial/DME calculations in readouts, inspectors and the Flight Plan.
  • The selected reference VOR is highlighted on the map when VOR markers are visible.

You can also click a VOR station marker and choose Use as reference VOR in the inspector.

Map Symbols

Each station is drawn with the chart symbol for its type, as on the ICAO/IAA charts, with a dot at the antenna:

Type (from vor.json) Symbol
VOR Hexagon
VOR/DME, DVOR/DME Hexagon inside a square
DME only (e.g. LOT) Square

A DME-only station gives distance but no radial, so the readouts show DME alone for it. The VOR station legend swatch is drawn by the same code as the map symbol.

Map Readout

When a reference VOR is selected, the bottom-right readout area shows a separate VOR box, for example:

NAT R-263° / 12.4 NM

This is separate from the coordinate readout so coordinates remain readable. The value follows the mouse position; when the mouse is not over the map, it follows the map centre.

It is the current VOR: the chosen reference while the point is within 200 NM of it (vorReadoutMaxNm), otherwise the nearest VOR within that range, otherwise nothing. A radial from Ben Gurion over Milan is a number no one can fly; the ident in the box says which station is speaking. On a phone the box sits above the coordinates.

Inspector Rows

Selecting a route waypoint, navigation waypoint or airfield shows a radial/DME row when a reference VOR is active:

From NAT VOR R-263° / 12.4 NM

The row does not require Show VOR stations to be enabled.

Flight Plan

The Flight Plan modal has a VOR selector above the table. Once a VOR is selected:

  • Radial and DME columns appear in the forward table.
  • The values are calculated to the leg's From point, not the destination.
  • The return-route table uses the start point of each return leg.
  • Each Radial cell includes a small per-leg VOR dropdown. Leave it blank to use the global VOR ref, or choose a different VOR for that leg.
  • If no global VOR and no per-leg override are selected, the Radial/DME columns collapse.

CSV export includes the displayed radial/DME values. The print layout is compressed to fit the extra columns on an A4 landscape page.

Persistence

Storage Meaning
navaid.showVorStations Whether VOR station markers are shown (navaid.showVor is the migrated legacy key).
navaid.vorRef The selected global reference VOR ident.
state.legs[i].vorRef Optional per-leg reference VOR override, saved inside navaid.route.

Notes

  • Radials are magnetic and use NavAid's magnetic-variation convention.
  • DME is great-circle distance in nautical miles.
  • VOR marker styling can be previewed in the hidden tuning panel (?tune=1) under VOR stations.
