Waypoints and Notes
🇮🇱 עברית
Adding — click the map in add mode (A), press Enter on a search result, load a template, or click a chart point while the first-run hint is up. With Snap to nearest point on, a new waypoint jumps to the closest known point and takes its name.
Selecting and editing — click it to open the Inspector: name, coordinates, satellite thumbnail, VOR reference, add a frequency change, delete, reset the name.
Deleting — D, or the Delete button in the inspector. The legs re-sync.
Drawing — a pale-yellow disc (waypointFillColor), amber when selected (selectedColor), with the name alongside if Show waypoint names is on.
A waypoint sitting on a junction — a published point where more than two routes meet — is
drawn with a red ring and a warmer fill (waypointHotspot* in the Tuning Panel).
Traffic converges at those points from several directions at once, which is worth seeing while
you plan rather than while you fly.
Which points count is derived from the route graph, not hand-maintained: a waypoint-kind node
with more than two distinct two-way neighbours (one-way and blocked segments do not count
towards it). A dataset entry may carry its own hotspot: true / hotspot: false, and that
always wins — including false, so a point that measures as a junction but does not behave
like one can be turned off.
Show hotspots sits in Map → Safety, beside mandatory reporting points and
snap-to-nearest — a hotspot marks where a route puts you somewhere you would rather not be,
which is a hazard, not route information. It turns the highlighting off and on without
touching any waypoint's own setting (navaid.showHotspots). It is currently off by
default from the tuning gist; a device where you have set it yourself keeps your choice.
An explicit hotspot: true / false on a point is an override and survives it.
On a route with a turning point, a hotspot that belongs only to the hidden half is hidden with it: the selected leg direction is the source of truth for whether that point is on show.
To see them all at once rather than one route at a time, open the map with
?hotspots=1.
Waypoints can snap to, and be searched from, three datasets — whichever the current chart uses:
| Source | Contents |
|---|---|
| Nav waypoints | Active official VFR reporting points (170 on CVFR), each with Hebrew and English names |
| Airfields | Israeli airfields by ICAO code (LLBG, LLHZ, …), with elevation, clearance frequency, runways and plates |
| VOR stations | Ident, frequency and position, for radial/DME |
See Nav-waypoints dataset and Airfields dataset.
Notes are free-standing map objects — text you place anywhere, independent of the route.
Adding — note mode from the Edit menu, then click where it should go.
Shapes — rectangle (the default) or oval.
Editing — select it and type; drag to move it. Fill colour and opacity come from the Display menu and the tuning keys.
Rotation — a note is a piece of paper laid on the chart, and it has an angle of its own: a label that reads along a coastline, a runway or a valley. The inspector's Rotation dialer turns it in 5° steps, and that angle belongs to the note and to nothing else — turning the chart does not move it, and it is not the map bearing. The clickable area turns with it, so a rotated note is hit where it is painted. It rides along when the route is saved, in the JSON export and in the saved-routes library; a note left straight adds nothing to the file. Identification points are not offered the control, because they are aligned across their leg by rule.
Deleting — the inspector's delete action while the note is selected.
A special note anchored to a leg rather than to the map: + Add identification point in the leg inspector drops an oval that shows the time from the leg's start, and it moves with the leg. Because it is anchored, replacing the whole route drops these (their leg no longer exists) while your free-standing notes survive.
Also stored as notes, so export/import and localStorage keep your chosen call sign, frequency and callout position — see Frequency Changes.
