Modules Bioenergetic Module

The bioenergetic module in OSMOSE follows the principles of a family of models known as bioenergetic models. When activated, this module replaces the processes described in the corresponding sections (i.e., parts of the Mortality, Growth, and Reproduction processes). OSMOSE implemented with this module is sometimes referred to as Bioen-OSMOSE.

The bioenergetic module assumes a triphasic growth model comprising a larval/post-larval phase, a juvenile phase, and an adult phase. It describes the flow of energy from Energy Uptake to New Tissue Production. After uptake, a part of the energy is assimilated and a part is mobilized. The mobilized energy is used to pay maintenance costs, to growth growth and reproduction costs, depending on the maturation status.

The maturation process depends on both age and size and is represented by a maturation reaction norm. Energy fluxes are influenced by temperature and oxygen concentration, allowing plastic responses to environmental conditions.

The mortalities emmerge from the processes represented in the bioenergetic budget: the predation mortality depends on the ingestion flux and the stravation mortality arises if the entrance of energy is lower than the maintenance needs.

For data-limited applications where only minimum, optimum, and maximum temperature values are available, the bioenergetic module can be configured using simplified equations.
