In Senbatsu, competitors are placed on a ranking ladder. The lowest eligible competitor challenges someone above within the configured challenge distance. A win replaces the challenged position; a loss eliminates the challenger.
The following example uses 8 teams in a single row, ordered from 8 to 1 (from lowest to highest rank):
| Initial ladder (low -> high) |
|---|
| Team 8 |
For this scenario, assume Challenge distance = 3.
| Step | Challenger | Opponent | Result | Eliminated team | Ladder after fight (low -> high) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Team 8 | Team 6 | Team 8 wins and takes Team 6 position | Team 6 | Team 7, Team 8, Team 5, Team 4, Team 3, Team 2, Team 1 |
| 2 | Team 7 | Team 8 | Team 7 wins and takes Team 8 position | Team 8 | Team 7, Team 5, Team 4, Team 3, Team 2, Team 1 |
| 3 | Team 7 | Team 4 | Team 7 wins and takes Team 4 position | Team 4 | Team 5, Team 7, Team 3, Team 2, Team 1 |
| 4 | Team 5 | Team 3 | Team 5 wins and takes Team 3 position | Team 3 | Team 7, Team 5, Team 2, Team 1 |
| 5 | Team 7 | Team 2 | Team 2 wins (challenger is eliminated) | Team 7 | Team 5, Team 2, Team 1 |
| 6 | Team 5 | Team 1 | Team 5 wins and takes Team 1 position | Team 1 | Team 2, Team 5 |
| 7 | Team 2 | Team 5 | Team 5 wins (challenger is eliminated) | Team 2 | Team 5 |
Final winner: Team 5.
The sole customizable feature available in this tournament is the "Challenge distance." This refers to the maximum distance from which a challenger can select an opponent. In other words, a challenger may only challenge a competitor who is within this specified distance on the ranking ladder.
