Translating
Goblinomics is written in English and I maintain the German translation myself. Every other language depends on people who play in that language and are willing to help. If that's you: thank you in advance.
Every text in the addon is its own English source text. There are no cryptic IDs like LEDGER_TITLE_2; you translate "Where the gold came from and where it went" directly. When a text has no translation yet, the addon shows the English one, so a half-finished translation is still perfectly usable.
French, Spanish (EU and Latin America), Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Korean and Simplified and Traditional Chinese each have their own file in the repository, Locales/frFR.lua and so on. They're empty for now, and that's where you come in.
If you know your way around GitHub: open the file for your language in Locales/, add lines like
L["Settings"] = "Paramètres"
L["Where the gold came from and where it went"] = "..."and send a pull request. Locales/deDE.lua shows what a finished file looks like. The complete list of texts is easiest to get by running tools/locale-export.sh, which writes every phrase into release/locale/enUS.lua. You can also just search the code for L[".
Not a GitHub person? Open an issue at https://github.com/xLN1995/goblinomics/issues, paste your translations as English = your language, one per line, and I'll put them in. Twenty phrases are already a real help.
A few tips:
- Use the terms from your game client. The German translation says "Auktionshaus" and "Kriegsmeuten-Bank" because that's what the German client says. Players should recognise the words.
- Keep placeholders like
%sand%dexactly as they are, in the same order. They're replaced by names, numbers or amounts. - Module names (Vault, Ledger, Gatherer, Workshop, Insights, Dashboard) and "Jealousmeter" are names. I keep them in English in German too, but if your language community would rather translate them, that's fine.
- Short is better. Buttons and table headers don't have much room.
Once a language has at least one translation, it shows up in Settings > General > Language with the next release. Until then it simply falls back to English.
The German texts live in the repository, in Locales/deDE.lua. If you find a mistake or a clumsy phrase, open an issue at https://github.com/xLN1995/goblinomics/issues or send a pull request against that file.
