Your app's settings

TheFactoryGuy edited this page Oct 30, 2026 · 1 revision

Many apps need settings that aren't in the code: a port, the address of a database, or a key from your payment provider. They live in an .env file. In Coodoo you fill them in without opening files yourself. Open the Your app's settings panel (on the right).

What Coodoo shows

Coodoo looks in your project for .env files and their examples, such as .env.example. If a folder only has an example, Coodoo creates the .env for you as soon as you save.

For each setting you see its name and the explanation the agent put above it. Settings that are still empty get the label to fill in. The App panel also warns you when your app is still missing something.

Choose per line

Choice When
Enter it yourself Plain values without a secret, such as PORT or your app's name
From the vault Keys and passwords. Pick one from the Project vault or create a new one right away
Leave empty The app doesn't need it (yet)

Then click Save.

A key from the vault: two ways

  • Only at start (safest, the default). The key isn't in any file. Coodoo hands it over when it starts your app, with Start app or when the team looks at your app. Agents never get it.
  • Also in the .env file. Your app then also finds the key when you start it outside Coodoo. Coodoo first makes sure the file stays out of git. Note: the agents can read the file.

If a file is in git (it goes to GitHub), only the first way is possible.

There's already a key in the file

Coodoo doesn't show a value that looks like a key. You see Leave as it is. With To the vault the value goes into the vault and Coodoo takes it out of the file; from then on Coodoo only hands it over at start.

On more than one computer

Which setting uses which vault key is kept in .coodoo/env.json (names only, never values) and goes to GitHub. The vault itself is separate on each computer. On another computer you therefore see which key is missing from the vault, and you add it there.

New settings

When a new goal needs a key, the agent adds it to .env.example with an explanation above it. It then shows up in this panel by itself. Never paste a key into the chat; fill it in here.
