The first partner. A Black British woman of Caribbean descent, second-generation, who was the cashier at the local newsagent in the protagonist's hometown: a small shop on the high street, the kind of shop a person pops into most days. A smile waiting. Chats about nothing: the weather, something in the paper, a thing she saw on telly. A fixture, not a friend exactly, but someone who made the day land a little softer.

She comes early because she is one of the lowest-risk memories. No history to untangle, no falling out, no guilt. Reaching for her does not require facing anything heavier yet. The partners later carry more.

Behind the counter, the same arrangement every morning. Scratchcards under the glass, the radio on a phone-in nobody is really listening to. She calls every regular my love. A pen lives tucked in her cardigan, never above her ear. When she does not feel like talking she turns the radio up; the shop fills with someone else's argument and she nods along and rings you through. On the last Thursday of the month a copy of The Voice sits folded under the till for Mr Edwards, who comes in after his shift and never has to ask. The warmth is real and it is not on tap.

In Construction she takes the other side of the court. Between points she lines up the ball, looks at the protagonist over the top of her glasses, and serves without saying the thing they were waiting for her to say. She speaks rarely. What she withholds is the lesson.

Lineage

Octavia Butler's "The Book of Martha" (2003) gives the name. In Butler's story God summons Martha, a Black woman novelist, and asks her to make a single change to humanity, on the condition that people must still find some happiness. Martha gives humanity dreams: every night, vivid, the thing each person most loves to do. Volley's Martha works at a smaller scale and the same one. A till in a small shop is where a person, on the worst day they are having, gets called my love and walks back out into it. She is not the architect of happiness; she is the small mercy that keeps the day liveable. That is the thread the name carries. The rest of the cast extends the partner-lineage rule; Butler is Martha's alone.

Working age range 45 to 60.
