Part 2. The arc after the break: worry, the search, items invoking memories, the key that opens the gate. High-level architecture in 00-two-styles.md; Reality as a style in 04-reality.md; the cliff and the gate in 05-postgame.md.

What Part 2 is

The arc after the break: Zach missing, worry, the search across Reality, items brought from Reality into the construct invoking memories, the final memory yielding a key.

This doc holds the structural detail: how Part 2 plays, the items-invoke-memories mechanic, the key.

Three play-level changes

Part 2 lives in both styles. Reality carries the search. Construction holds the rally that surfaces what the search needs. Construction must feel different to play, not only look hollowed:

  • The score is hidden in Construction. The count climbed visibly through Part 1; in Part 2 the number disappears from the rally HUD. The volley count falls to the side; the game becomes the search.
  • Coaches' lines reach back. Each coach who keeps showing up in Construction carries memories of Zach into the rally between points. Their lines soften, lengthen, surface what they remember. The shift is in dialogue, not in stat.
  • Audio shifts. Construction's bright synthetic music thins; acoustic instruments arrive; the balance moves toward fuller arrangement by late Part 2. Full direction in SH-281.

Items invoke memories

The protagonist gains the ability to travel between the construct and Reality at will. The game becomes finding memorable items in Reality and bringing them into the construct. Each item invokes a memory. A set of memories accumulates, and each memory narrows where Zach could be.

The key, the gate

The final memory yields a key. The protagonist returns to the garden with the key in hand. The locked gate at the back of the garden is the one locked gate in the whole game. They unlock it and step through to the cliff in Reality. Zach is on the memorial bench dedicated to their friend.

What happens at the cliff lives in 05-postgame.md.

Open questions

  • Memory count. How many memories across Part 2? Idle pacing argues four to six; narrative arc argues five to seven. Affects content scope and pacing.
  • Per-item scene shape. Each memorable item is found in a hand-crafted Reality scene. Variety: a place to visit, a person to ask, an item to find, a moment to witness. Mix and pacing are open.
  • Final-memory gate. What counts as enough to trigger the key-yielding final memory?
  • Bridge unlock signal. What does the player see or feel that marks the bridge between Construction and Reality as available, after the break?

Production notes

  • The items-invoke-memories mechanic is the spine of Part 2. SH-279 (tech spike on Reality gameplay) absorbs the tooling.
  • Each item is found in a hand-crafted Reality scene. Item count equals scene count. Bound the scope at SH-275 venue scope and Part 2 length together.
  • The cast doubles in Part 2 (each cross-style character with a Reality-side asset). Worth bounding the partner count early.
