Overview

You can create two types of actor in the Rolemaster Unified system:

  • Characters: these are intended to have race, culture, and profession, and to gain experience and levels
  • Creatures: these are intended to create creatures or simple NPCs using base templates

To create a character or creature, select the "Create Actor" button at the top of the Actor sidebar.

Create Actor button

This will open a small dialog where you can enter the name (which can be changed later), select the actor type, and (optionally) select which folder you would like to put the actor into, in the sidebar.

Creating characters

If you select the character type, you will begin with a basic character template in character creation mode. All initial characters start with the "Human, Common" race. When you create the template it will roll for the character's height and weight.

Although this guide is set out in steps, you can move forward and backwards between steps using the Next and Back buttons in the action bar.

You can track character creation in the checklist. You cannot finish character creation until each step is complete.

Character Creation Checklist

Step 1: Choose your race, culture and profession

The first thing to do with any character is select its race, culture and profession. Either go to the one of the official compendia and drag the race, culture and profession items onto the sheet, or choose one of your own from your Items sidebar. In this example, we have dragged the Dwarf, Highland and Bard items to the sheet, and this has updated the title block of the actor sheet.

When you drag a different race to the sheet, it will re-roll the character's height and weight.

Step 2: Select summary characteristics

You can now select some basic characteristics for the character:

  • Realm: (this is set automatically for some professions)
  • Power Level: you can change the power level for each character, otherwise it will use the default that was chosen in the System Settings and Options
  • Sex: changing a character's sex will re-roll the character's height and weight.
  • Height and weight: you can also manually enter a height and weight if you do not want to use the randomly generated values

Step 3: Generate stats

You have three options for how to generate potential and temporary stats for the character:

  • Roll Stats: Roll all stats randomly. After the rolls are complete, you will see the results and be given the option of making stat boosts and stat swaps (depending on the power level).
  • Purchase Stats: Roll potential stats randomly and purchase starting potential stats using points. After the rolls are complete, you will see the results and can then increase or decrease the potential stats until all points are spent. You can also make stat swaps.
  • Enter Stats: Manually assign stats to both potential and temporary stats. After the rolls are complete, you will see the results. You cannot make any other changes.

Stat boosts and swaps

Depending on how you generated the stats, you may be offered the opportunity to boost or swap stats (or both). To do this, just click the stat button and it will open a dialog which gives you all valid options for that stats, and shows you available options for other stats.

Step 4: Select culture skills

If the culture you selected offers options for some of the included skills, you can make the choices on the Culture Skills step of the checklist.

Character Creation Culture Ranks

Click the + sign to open the Add Culture Skill dialog and select the option you want until all ranks have been assigned (usually a maximum of 2 ranks per skill).

Character Creation Add Culture Skill

Note that any skills that do not require choices are not show here, but are visible on the actor sheet once character creation is finished.

Step 5: Select profession skills

Select 10 skills which will receive a bonus for each rank in the skill.

Step 6: Select knacks

Select which profession skills will receive a knack bonus (the number of bonuses and the maximum that can be added to a single skill is determined by the power level).

Step 7: Select combat training DP cost allocation

Select which combat training skill will get which DP cost. These choices cannot be changed after character creation.

Creating creatures

Until Creature Law II is released and rules for creating creatures published, there is limited options for creating creatures as the fields in the creature sheet cannot be edited directly.
