Builder

dckiller51 edited this page Oct 17, 2026 · 4 revisions

The builder is where you design the dashboard. Open it from the remote's web page (Dashboard builder) or directly at:

http://<remote-ip>:8080/builder/

You edit visually, a live preview of the remote shows the result, and Save to device applies it to the remote in a second. No JSON to write by hand, although the JSON is always there if you want it.

The builder follows your browser's language: English, French, Italian or Spanish.

💡 Open it from the remote, not from a saved copy. That way it loads the remote's current dashboard.json, shows live Home Assistant data in the preview, offers your entities and icons in the pickers, and can save straight to the device.

The screen at a glance

  • Left: the settings, in numbered sections.
  • Right: the preview, with the page tabs on top and the remote's screen and keys below. Tap the screen to edit at full size.

The header shows the installed version and whether an update is available. Tick Also the beta to see beta builds too.

Pages

In the preview:

  • Page tabs: click a tab to show that page. Drag tabs to reorder pages. ⚙ opens the page settings.
  • + (right of the tabs) adds a page.
  • 🏠 marks the start page, shown when the remote boots.

Page settings (⚙)

Setting What it does
Name Shown in the tabs; also what hotkeys and tiles use to open the page.
Start page Shown when the remote starts.
Parent page + Return-to-parent button Makes this a "child" page (e.g. TV › Inputs): a key (BACK by default) jumps back to the parent.
Linked page + How it opens Swiping up from the page dots opens another page, full screen or as a popup over the current one. Handy for a "more controls" page.
Auto-open when this entity's state is… Jumps to this page (or pops it up) when an entity changes, e.g. a doorbell. …and auto-close when closes it again.
Hide unless this Activity is running The page's dot only appears while that Activity is on. Hide completely also skips it when swiping.
Popup size & position Width, height (% of screen) and position, used whenever this page opens as a popup: linked page, auto-open, a tile, or a hotkey.
Delete page Removes the page and everything on it. You're asked to confirm.

Cards

  • + (bottom right of the preview screen): add a card. Pick its type, fill in the form, then Add card to page.
  • ✎ on a card: edit it. ✕: delete it, after a confirmation.
  • ↑ / ↓, or drag a card: reorder.

Each card type has its own form, and its own wiki page in the sidebar. Entities are picked from the device catalogue you set up on the web page, so you choose names, not raw ids.

Card types are grouped: Common, Media, Grids, Remotes, Home & layout. Since 1.2.9 every card type has its own form; Advanced (raw options) only holds Other / custom type…, where you type a card's type and options as JSON. A Row's cards are edited with the same forms, one after the other.

The sections on the left

Section What's there
Load an existing dashboard.json Paste a file to edit it, or Start over. Opened from the remote, the current dashboard is already loaded.
1. Hotkeys What every physical key does: Physical keys & hotkeys.
2. Activities Multi-device "Watch TV" scenes: Activities.
3. Theme & Colors Every colour of the dashboard (backgrounds, text, accents, status), with a live preview and Reset to defaults.
4. Dock screen What the remote shows on its charger: Dock screen.
5. Standby & battery Quiet mode, motion wake, screen timeout: Standby & battery.
6. Generated JSON The resulting dashboard.json: Copy JSON, Download dashboard.json.

Saving

  • Save to device: the remote reloads the dashboard right away. Nothing else to do. Add a note in the field below it ("new Apple TV page") to find this version later.
  • Download dashboard.json: keep a copy, or edit it by hand. The web page can restore it later.

Undo and version history (since 1.3.0)

Undo / redo: ↶ ↷ above the preview, or Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y (Ctrl+Shift+Z) outside a text field. Every change can be undone: a card, a hotkey, the theme, an Activity… Quick changes in a row (typing a colour, moving a slider) count as one step. It works before saving, and after too: undo, then Save to device again.

Version history (🕘): the remote keeps every save — from the builder or from its web page — in /sdcard/astrion/history: the last 30, plus the versions you pin. For each version: date, number of pages and cards, your note, and:

Action Does
Open in the editor Loads that version in the builder to look at it. Nothing changes on the remote until you Save to device; ↶ brings back what you had.
Restore on the remote Puts that version back on the remote right away. The current one stays in the history, so a restore can be undone too.
Download Saves it as a .json file, a backup like any other.
Pin Never deleted automatically. Pin "my config that works".
Note Type in the field to describe the version.
Delete Removes it from the history.

A change made outside the web page (a setting changed on the remote, a file copied by hand) is kept too, as a version marked changed outside the builder, before the next save replaces it.

💡 Try anything: if you don't like it, ↶, or Restore the version from before.

Sends from the Astrion Config Manager add-on are kept in this history too.

Tips

  • Start small: one page, one card, Save to device, check on the remote. Then grow.
  • The preview uses live Home Assistant data when opened from the remote, and example data otherwise.
  • Want to edit dashboard.json by hand? See the reference: EN · FR · DE · IT · ES.
