Multiple Remotes

One remote per room works well. Each remote is independent, but they can share the same devices and the same Home Assistant, and Home Assistant can tell them apart. (Since 1.2.7)

Each remote has an identity

  • An id (astrion-…), fixed for the life of the remote. It survives app updates, reinstalls and IP changes; only a factory reset gives a new one.
  • A name, e.g. Living room or Bedroom. Set it on the remote (Settings › About › Name of this remote) or with Rename at the top of its web page.

Home Assistant uses both: the integration creates one device per remote, named after it, and every button event says which remote sent it.

💡 Name each remote after its room before adding it to Home Assistant, so its device and entities get a clear name straight away.

🧰 Managing several remotes from Home Assistant? The community add-on Astrion Config Manager lists them all, keeps their history and copies pages between them.

What is per remote, what can be shared

Per remote How to share it
dashboard.json (pages, cards, hotkeys, Activities, theme) ✅ each remote has its own Build one, Download backup, then Restore backup on the others, and adjust · or copy pages between remotes with Astrion Config Manager
Home Assistant URL & token ✅ One token per remote is best: you can revoke one without touching the others
Harmony hubs, IR extenders ✅ set on each remote Several remotes can use the same hub or extender
Apple TV pairing ✅ pair it on each remote An Apple TV accepts several remotes
IR database files, icons ✅ Upload them on each remote
Running Activities ⚠️ see below

Running Activities

Each remote keeps track of the Activities it started. If the bedroom remote starts Watch TV in the bedroom, the living-room remote doesn't know it.

Two exceptions:

  • Harmony activities follow the hub's live state, so every remote using that hub sees them, whoever started them.
  • With the integration, Home Assistant sees each remote's Activities (Active activity (room)) and can start or stop them on any remote.

Easiest setup: each remote handles the Activities of its own room.

Telling remotes apart in Home Assistant

Button events carry the remote's name and id. One automation can do something different per remote:

trigger:
  - platform: event
    event_type: astrion_button
    event_data:
      event: lights_off
action:
  - service: light.turn_off
    target:
      area_id: "{{ trigger.event.data.remote_name | lower | replace(' ', '_') }}"

With the integration, astrion_event also carries the Home Assistant device_id, which you can pick in the automation editor.

Services (astrion.set_page, astrion.ring…) take an optional device_id to target one remote. Without it they act on every remote.

The dock clock in each room

On the dock screen, "Now playing" can follow the Activity running in the remote's own room (since 1.2.8). Set Room of this remote in builder › 4. Dock screen. The bedroom remote then never shows what's playing in the living room. Give each Activity its content source in the Activity wizard's last step.

Changing or replacing a remote

  • New IP: with push on, the integration follows the remote by itself. Otherwise use Reconfigure in Home Assistant, or add it again with the new IP (the existing entry is updated).
  • Replacing a remote: restore the old one's backup on the new one, give it the same name, then Reconfigure the old Home Assistant entry with the new IP. The new remote takes over the device, entities and automations.

Example: the "room picker" setup

Some people use one remote for several rooms and let an input_select choose the room it controls:

  1. An input_select.astrion_1_room in Home Assistant (Living room, Bedroom…).
  2. A select card on the remote's first page to switch rooms.
  3. Pages and tiles that call scripts using that input_select.

Several remotes then each get their own input_select (astrion_1_room, astrion_2_room…).
