Summary

  • /distill rename: webchat slash-command was /compact, now /distill. Signal command already named /distill, dropped compact alias.
  • Emergency distillation pre-flight: context.ts now checks lastInputTokens >= 90% of contextWindow before building each turn. If over the threshold, distills immediately and continues. This prevents the stuck loop: context > 200K → API 400 → finalize never runs → never distills → infinite loop.
  • Configurable allowedRoots: agents.defaults.allowedRoots (global) and per-agent allowedRoots array added to schema. Merged with paths.root in resolve.ts. To unblock path traversal to /home/ckickertz/summus, add to aletheia.json:
    "agents": {
      "defaults": {
        "allowedRoots": ["/home/ckickertz/summus"]
      }
    }

Root cause analysis

The 70% auto-distillation threshold in finalize.ts fires after a successful turn. When a session reaches 100%+ context (168K → API call fails → 400 error), finalize.ts never executes, so auto-distillation never fires. The 90% pre-flight in context.ts catches this before the API call, breaking the loop.

Test plan

  • Let a session grow to >90% context utilization — verify logs show "Emergency distillation" before the turn executes
  • Verify /distill works in webchat and Signal; /compact no longer works
  • Add a path to agents.defaults.allowedRoots — verify read/grep/find works on that path without "Path traversal blocked" error
  • Build: npm run build in infrastructure/runtime — clean

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Emergency distillation (context.ts):
- Pre-flight check at turn start: if lastInputTokens >= 90% of contextWindow,
  distill before executing. Prevents the 400 "prompt too long" stuck loop
  where finalize.ts never runs because the API call fails first.

Configurable allowedRoots (schema.ts + resolve.ts):
- Add agents.defaults.allowedRoots (global) and per-agent allowedRoots
  to allow file access outside the workspace without removing the traversal guard.
- aletheia.json example: add "/home/ckickertz/summus" to agents.defaults.allowedRoots

…oots (#35)

Three fixes:

1. /distill rename — webchat command renamed from /compact to /distill, alias removed from Signal commands. Naming consistency.

2. Emergency distillation guard — pre-flight check in context.ts: if lastInputTokens >= 90% of context window, distill immediately before building history. Breaks the death spiral where context exceeds limit → API 400 → finalize never runs → distillation never triggers → stuck forever.

3. Configurable allowedRoots — per-agent and global agents.defaults.allowedRoots arrays in schema, merged with ALETHEIA_ROOT in resolve stage. Enables file access outside workspace (e.g. /home/ckickertz/summus) without disabling traversal guards.

## Summary

- Upgrade workspace `reqwest` from 0.12 to 0.13 with
`rustls-no-provider` feature, explicitly using **ring** as the crypto
provider instead of aws-lc-rs (the new 0.13 default)
- Install ring crypto provider in both binary entrypoints (`aletheia`,
`aletheia-tui`) before any TLS connections are made
- Add `query` feature (now opt-in in reqwest 0.13) since TUI uses
`.query()`
- Update `reqwest-eventsource` to a git dep tracking the [reqwest 0.13
PR](jpopesculian/reqwest-eventsource#35)
(upstream 0.6.0 is pinned to reqwest 0.12)
- Remove OpenSSL license from `deny.toml` (aws-lc-sys fully eliminated)
- Add `install_crypto_provider()` helper to all test modules creating
reqwest clients

### Dependency verification

| Check | Result |
|-------|--------|
| `cargo tree -i aws-lc-sys` | not found ✓ |
| `cargo tree -i openssl-sys` | not found ✓ |
| `cargo tree -i ring` | present ✓ |
| duplicate rustls/hyper major versions | none ✓ |
| `cargo test --workspace` | all pass ✓ |
| `cargo clippy --workspace` | clean ✓ |

### Notes

- `hf-hub` still pulls in reqwest 0.12 as a transitive dependency — this
is expected and cannot be controlled from our side
- `reqwest-eventsource` uses a git dep until upstream merges PR #35;
`deny.toml` `allow-git` updated accordingly

## Test plan

- [x] `cargo check --workspace`
- [x] `cargo test --workspace` — all pass
- [x] `cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings` — zero
warnings
- [x] `cargo fmt --check`
- [x] Verify no aws-lc-sys or openssl-sys in dependency tree
- [x] Verify ring is the active crypto provider

Manually merged via local validation (bypass of kanon CI gate). All
gates verified locally: fmt + check + clippy + kanon lint (PR-scoped).

Admin-Bypass: verifier test_count divergence: structural mismatch between main pipeline (--features test-core) and verifier reproducer (cargo nextest list --workspace, no features). All 5 CI stages pass. Bypass approved by operator.

Manually merged via local validation (bypass of kanon CI gate). All
gates verified locally: fmt + check + clippy + kanon lint (PR-scoped).

Admin-Bypass: verifier test_count divergence: structural mismatch between main pipeline (--features test-core) and verifier reproducer (cargo nextest list --workspace, no features). All 5 CI stages pass. Bypass approved by operator.
