Internal Name
crane

Cranes are large, elegant birds found across many biomes worldwide. There are 14 species. The Sarus Crane and Wattled Crane are notably larger than other species, while the Demoiselle Crane is smaller. They were added in the 1.8.0 Exploration Update.

Behavior

Movement

Cranes fly around and walk on the ground. Being diurnal, they sleep at night. Baby cranes will stay still and not wander.

Cranes follow a flock leader and gather in groups of up to 10.

Grooming

Adult cranes will occasionally stop and perform a grooming animation. They will not groom while sleeping, swimming, or as babies.

Timidity

Cranes are shy and will avoid players within 6 blocks.

Breeding

Cranes can be bred with wheat seeds, beetroot seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, mealworms, and sweet berries.

Spawn

Cranes spawn on grass and other animal-spawnable blocks in sufficiently lit areas. In savanna biomes, only the Grey Crowned Crane and Black Crowned Crane will spawn. Otherwise, they spawn in swamp biomes.

Rarer species spawn less frequently. Spawn chances are weighted by conservation status, with more threatened species being harder to find.

Drops

Cranes drop 1-2 , 1 or (on fire).
