Stingrays are flat-bodied rays found in hot ocean biomes. They are generally peaceful and will flee from players, but will retaliate if attacked, inflicting Poison on their attacker. Many species bury themselves in the seafloor to hide from predators.
Stingrays use a unique gliding movement, swimming low and staying close to the seafloor. They naturally drift downward when not actively moving. Most stingrays are nocturnal. They are more active at night and rest during the day. The Pelagic Stingray (variant 13) is an exception and is active at all times.
Most stingrays will bury themselves in sand, dirt, gravel, clay, and similar soft blocks when resting on the seafloor. The following variants cannot burrow:
- Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray (3)
- Round Ribbontail Ray (4)
- Pelagic Stingray (13)
Stingrays avoid players, but will attack if provoked. On a successful hit they apply Poison:
- Normal difficulty: 7 seconds
- Hard difficulty: 15 seconds
The Porcupine Stingray (variant 14) is the exception. It does not inflict poison.
Stingrays give live birth and do not lay eggs. Feed two stingrays of opposite genders Fish Food to trigger breeding, and baby stingrays will be born directly.
Stingrays spawn in hot ocean biomes in groups of 1-2. They are solitary and do not school with other stingrays.
