Lock It In

Rule 30 from Practice Perfect

When you are giving a student or colleague feedback, it is unlikely that they will fully understand your comments unless you check their understanding.

Lock It In is a technique where the person giving feedback asks the reciever to summarive what they've heard, prioritize their next steps and identify the most important takeaway from the session.

There are three tools you can use to lock in feedback with a mentee. You can use one at a time, or all three at once.

You will invite your mentee to do the following to 'Lock It In'

#1 Summarize the Feedback

  • "Let's have you rollback to the beginning of our conversation and summarize what we've covered so far."
  • "Tell me what I told you."
  • "Let's both stop and make sure we have a shared understanding."

#2 Prioritize the Feedback

  • "I'd like you to take a moment to reflect and tell me the 1-2 most iportant things we've talked about."

#3 Identify their Next Action

  • "What's the first thing your going to do when you're working on this again?"
