Negotiating to Success

  • Women's earning power is 90% of men's right after college, and decreases to 45% after x number of years.
  • Negotiation is selling. You are selling your professional skillset and knowledge.
  • Negotiation is not adversarial.
  • Negotiation is problem solving.

The Goal of Negotiation

  • To get what you want

Before a Negotiation

  • Research how much people in comparable roles make
  • (For a promotion) Determine how much you generate for the company
  • Look good. Wear clean, well-fitting clothes, shower, take care of your hair.

How to Negotiate

  1. Prepare. Know Everything.

    • Know what you've done right
    • Know what you've done wrong
    • Write down wins and losses!
  2. Practice telling your story

  3. Know your 'walkaway' point

  4. Have a Backup Plan

  5. Ask, then Be Quiet.
