Build Radically Candid Relationships

  • A boss is responsible for leveraging a team's work to achieve results This requires:
  1. Guidance
  2. Team-Building
  3. Results
  • Your relationships with the people you manage are the most important part of your job

  • Radical Candor has two dimensions:

  1. Caring Personally
  2. Challenging Directly

Get, Give and Encourage Guidance

  • Don't worry about 'sandwiching' feedback
  • Don't personalize feedback. Talk about behaviors, not 'the person'
  • The quadrant:
    1. Ruinous Empathy
    2. Obnoxious aggression
    3. Manipulative Insincerity
    4. Radical Candor
  • Ask your team to give you feedback before you start giving feedback as part of your routine
  • Praise and criticize
  • You can, and should, be raically candid with people you know well and those you don't
  • Give a damn and just say it.
