From the 2018 Ghosh Yoga Immersive

The brain uses most of it's sensory processing energy on stimulation from the hands, feet and mouth.

  • Placing your hands in a mudra helps stimulate the nerves of the arm, and eventually the brain stops monitoring that part of the body. This frees up cognitive energy to 'go inward' in meditation.

Nerves of the hand

  • There are 3 nerves that ennervate in the hand
    • The median nerve
    • The radial nerve
    • The ulnar nerve

Kubera Mudra

  1. The pinky and ring finger touch the palm
  2. The first and second finger touch the thumb
  • This mudra stimulates all 3 nerves in the hand

Hridaya Mudra

pronounced ree-DAH-yah

  1. The first finger touches the palm
  2. The ring and middle fingers touch the thumb
  3. The pinky relaxes
  • This mudra stimulates the median and radial nerves

Jnana Mudra

  1. The index finger touches the thumb
  2. The other fingers relax
  • This mudra stimulates the median nerve, the largest nerve in the arm
