7.2 The layers
Layers — ORBITS (orbital paths, sampled from the real ephemeris, so they
are the true eccentric orbits), CLOUDS, PLANETS, CME, SUN OBS, LABELS,
SMALL BODIES, QSO, SATS, AURORA, PROP and AWARDS. All but PROP and
AWARDS are on to begin with — those two each paint the whole planet (one with a
marker on all three hundred-odd DXCC entities, the other with a wash of colour),
so they wait until you ask for them. Switching either on stands the other down,
because two full-globe washes at once is neither.
SUN OBS is solar observations on the Sun's disk: the sunspot active regions
and the flare source locations, which used to be two buttons and are one idea.
The name also settles a collision — everywhere else in this manual, SPOTS
means the DX cluster.
The star field and the heliographic graticule (the solar rotation axis, equator
and parallels) have no buttons: they are the backdrop and the coordinate frame
everything else is read against, and are always drawn.
