Behavior and Orders

Behaviors

Every companion has one behavior. Change it on the Overview tab of the companion menu or for all companions at once with the command wheel.

Behavior Follows you Fights
Follow yes Mobs that attack you or the companion.
Wait no, stays where it is Only mobs that attack the companion itself.
Passive yes Never.
Protect yes Mobs that attack you or the companion, plus every monster near you (10 blocks) that is hunting something.
Hunt monsters yes Dangerous monsters within 16 blocks: zombies, skeletons, creepers, spiders, witches, illagers, blazes, ghasts, guardians, the Warden and similar. Endermen, piglins and other neutral mobs are left alone.
Hunt all mobs yes Every mob within 16 blocks except villagers, players and other companions.

The two distances (10 and 16 blocks) can be changed by the server owner, see Configuration.

Companions never attack you, villagers or other companions. With PartyLink installed, they also leave your party members and their companions alone.

Following and teleporting

A following companion walks after you when you are more than its follow distance away (4 blocks by default) and teleports to you beyond its teleport distance (30 blocks). It only teleports to a safe spot next to you – solid ground, enough room, no lava, and only into water if you allow it. While you fly or fall it waits until you land.

When you change dimension, following companions come along a moment later. Waiting companions stay where they are and can be fetched with Recall at any time.

Both distances and the water rule are per companion, on the Settings tab of the companion menu.
