Getting Started

Your first companion

  1. Craft a Capture Charm Capture Charm (recipe): lapis lazuli, gold nuggets and an emerald.
  2. Right-click a friendly animal with it – a wolf, cat, fox, horse, pig, villager or almost any other mob that is not a monster.
  3. The animal is now your companion. It follows you, defends you and shows up in the HUD at the top left.

Binding rolls two things: a rarity (Normal, Rare, Epic or Legendary) and whether the companion is Enhanced. Both make it stronger, see Leveling and Skills.

Opening the menu

Press J to open the companion overview – your team, your archive and the HUD settings. You do not need the whistle for that. From there, Menu on a card opens the companion menu with its attributes, inventory, ability, statistics and settings. See Companion Menu.

Shortcuts:

  • V opens the inventory of your selected companion.
  • Sneak + right-click your companion with an empty hand opens its menu.
  • Hold G for the command wheel.

Storing and calling companions

You can have up to three companions in your team (one of them out at a time, by default). The others wait in their team slot. In the overview:

  • Summon brings a stored companion out next to you.
  • Store puts the companion back into its slot – from any distance, even if it waits far away or in another dimension.
  • Recall brings it to you without storing it.
  • Archive frees the team slot by moving the companion into your archive (12 places by default).

More on that in Team and Archive.

Making it stronger

Your companion gains XP when it or you defeat mobs nearby, when you feed it and slowly while it stays close to you. Every level gives a skill point for Strength, Defense, Attack Speed or Vitality. At level 10 it unlocks its species ability. Gear, amulets and gems add even more – see Inventory and Equipment.

Keeping it alive

A companion never dies right away. When its health runs out it is wounded for 30 seconds – use a Large Companion Bandage on it to save it. If you do not make it in time, you receive a Companion Totem and can bring it back at a Companion Shrine with a Companion Heart from an Iron Golem. See Injuries and Revival.
