Inventory and Equipment

Open the inventory with V, the Inventory tab of the companion menu, or the slot icons on the Overview tab.

Companion inventory

It works like a chest: drag items, shift-click, use the number keys. Every item keeps all its data – enchantments, names, durability, contents.

Slots

Slot What goes in
Storage (9) Anything.
Bonus storage (9) Anything. Unlocks for enhanced companions at level 20.
Food The food this companion likes. When its health drops below 60 %, it eats one from this slot on its own.
Gear A harness or plating: armor, max health and for some tiers attack speed, knockback resistance or a special effect. Vanilla animals wear it visibly.
Amulet A companion amulet: bonus attributes.
Gem A companion gem: bonus attributes.

All gear, amulets and gems with their values are listed on Items.

Gear tiers

The first five tiers are crafted one from another: leather, iron, gold, diamond, netherite. Three rarer platings come from the hardest places of the game and each has its own special effect:

Plating Made from Special effect
Shulker Plating Shulker Plating Iron Plating and 4 Shulker Shells (End Cities) Half damage from arrows and other projectiles, no levitation, 60 % knockback resistance
Echo Plating Echo Plating Diamond Plating and 4 Echo Shards (Ancient Cities) Melee attackers take back 20 % of their damage, darkness and blindness wear off at once
Dragon Scale Plating Dragon Scale Plating Netherite Plating and 4 Dragon Scales (each Ender Dragon drops 4) The strongest tier: immune to fire and lava

Visible armor

Gear is not only numbers: vanilla animals wear it. Body, neck and legs get plates in the material of the tier, and every tier adds its own pieces – a riding blanket and leather straps, a knight's helmet with shoulder plates, a golden crown, crystal shards, a horned netherite helmet with spikes, layered shulker shells, glowing sculk tendrils or dragon horns and wing fins. Many animals also get pieces of their own: horses a face plate and neck plates, llamas neck rings, camels a hump cover, wolves a spiked collar, goats horn caps, chickens and parrots wing guards, turtles a shell rim.

The armor moves with the animal, fits babies and every variant, and glowing parts stay bright at night.

In each picture the back row shows dragon, echo, shulker and netherite, the front row diamond, gold, iron and leather (from left to right).

Visible armor is shown on wolves, cats, ocelots, foxes, pigs, cows, mooshrooms, sheep, chickens, rabbits, horses, donkeys, mules, skeleton and zombie horses, llamas, trader llamas, camels, goats, pandas, polar bears, turtles, armadillos, sniffers, frogs, axolotls, parrots, striders, iron golems and snow golems. Animals from other mods get the full effect of their gear, just without the look.

Food

Every animal likes its usual food, for example meat for wolves, fish for cats, berries for foxes and wheat for cows and sheep. The Overview and Ability tabs show what yours needs. Feeding by hand heals 4 + 0.5 per Vitality point, gives 5 XP and has a short cooldown.

The server owner can set the food of any animal, see Configuration.

Collecting items

Switch Collect items on (Settings tab or the button in the inventory) and your companion picks up items within 3 blocks into its storage slots – loot from fights, harvested crops, anything. Items you just dropped yourself are left alone for ten seconds. Allays collect from twice as far away (Collector).

Take all moves everything from the storage slots into your inventory.

Packing and releasing

Stored and archived companions keep their inventory. A released companion drops everything it carried.
