- Spend at least 20hrs/week on research
- The vast majority of hours should be spent in the lab
- Progress is the most important indicator or work!
- Attend lab meetings and events
- Keep detailed, organized lab books
- Meet with Rob regularly (weekly'ish)

Introduction/Proposal - due (First Monday in July) 5%
- This document serves as the introduction to your final report. By writing it early in your ROP you will better understand the context of what you're doing.
- The introduction should include:
- the big-picture of your project (1-2 paragraphs)
- a review the relevant literature that motivates why your project matters
- background on your study system
- The question(s) that you will address in your report
- Format:
- 3-5 pages double spaced
- Should be prepared like the introduction to a scientific data paper
- Reference relevant literature using style of Molecular Biology and Evolution

Report - 30% (August 18th)
- Introduction
- incorporate improvements from first draft.
- Methods:
- the methods should include all the details necessary to repeat your work
- protocols and extra details can be attached as supplemental material
- Write in 1st person (ie I/We conducted an experiment) NOT passive voice (an experiment was conducted)
- hint: more detail is better than less
- Results:
- the results should be detailed
- refer to real data and specific values
- Statements of significance should be accompanied by statistics
- The results should generally be arranged to address the questions
- interpretation of results is saved for the discussion
- Discussion
- Interpret your results and what they mean
- this includes from the small details up to the big picture.
- Remember that you stated questions in your intro - answer them!

Lab presentation - 10%
- graded as pass/fail
- presentations should mostly be context for the audience
- presentation of data, proposed ideas, or problems

Lab notebook and data - 20% (August 18th)
- Lab notebook should document work completed with dates and enough detail for a lab member to understand
- digital notebooks are preferred especially for bioinformatic or computational analyses
- All data generated should be organized and clearly described and reviewed with Rob *this is very important

Participation - 5% pass/fail
- show up to lab meetings/events/ and special seminars
- participate in lab meetings etc

Research performance and Work Ethic 30%
- This mark is subject to Rob’s judgement
- It is the overall impression of the quality of your research abilities and performance
- Key aspects of a good researcher
- progress
- initiative and work ethic
- independent, critical thinking

- professionalism (not to be confused with formality! )
- attention to detail
- ability to work well with lab members
