Installing Virtual Machine

The SimMobility installation instructions under the New Developer's Guide apply to a system running Linux.

If you are running a Windows OS, and wish to install an Ubuntu virtual machine, these instructions are for you.

What is a Virtual Machine (VM)?

A virtual machine is, for our purposes, a computer within a computer. Usually aimed to perform tasks that the host OS cannot handle.

Installing Ubuntu VM on a Windows OS

1. Download your desired version of Ubuntu from the following link: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Save the downloaded .iso file (about 1.5 GB) in a permanent location, i.e., not in your "Downloads" folder. Nor do you need to save it in a cloud storage folder (Dropbox, Google Drive). Simply in a permanent location on your hard drive.

2. Download VM hosting software Options:

• Oracle VM VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/
• VMware
• others

3. Open Oracle VM VirtualBox

4. Click "New"

5. Give new VM a name of your choice

6. Type: Linux

7. Version: Ubuntu 64 bit

8. Click "Next"

9. Accept all default settings

10. Click "Settings" (top left)

11. Storage

12. Under "Controller: IDE - Empty": Click "Empty"

13. Click CD icon on top right

14. "Choose Optical Disk or File"

15. Find and select you saved .iso file, click "Open" or double click

16. Ok

Now let us open our new VM. Installation is not complete, but we are getting close.

17. Click your new VM

18. Click "Install Ubuntu"

19. "Download updates while installing Ubuntu" (or any other setting of your choice)

20. Continue

21. "Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu"

22. Install Now

23. Continue

24. Select Time Zone (The default is fine)

25. Continue

26. Select Language (default is fine)

27. Continue

28. Choose your settings

29. Continue

30. Wait a while. Then Click "Restart Now"

Now you have your virtual Computer installed.
