Background: Criminal
You have lived on the wrong side of the law, and you learned its lessons well: how to move without being seen, how to open what someone wanted kept shut, how to read a room for the exits and the easy marks and the one person watching too closely. You know the folk who work the dark hours (the fences, the smugglers, the lookouts, the ones who never give a straight name) and how to speak to them without saying too much. Maybe you did it to survive, or for the thrill, or because the law protected everyone but you. Whatever set you on that road, the habits it taught you do not wash off, and neither, sometimes, do the debts. Even the ones you thought were already paid off.
You know how the underworld passes what it does not want overheard. Wherever you go, you can find the local version of the people you used to run with (a fence, a smuggler, a tavern that asks no questions) and make yourself known without a word out of place. Through them you can get a message to almost anyone, quietly, or learn who really runs the streets and what they are afraid of. The catch is that favors in that world are never free, and the people who trade in them remember exactly what they are owed.
