Background: Sage
You wanted to know, and wanting to know is a harder master than any lord. You have spent years where the good books are kept: copying failing manuscripts before the ink gave out entirely, chasing one citation through four libraries, arguing with people three centuries dead in the margins of their own work. You know which empires told the truth about themselves and which are still being believed, and you can read a spell's structure the way a mason reads a wall, seeing where the weight sits and what would happen if you pulled the wrong stone. You have cast a little of it yourself, carefully, because theory is not the same as practice and you have read what happens to those who forget the difference. There is always one more question. That is the trouble with answers.
You may not have the answer, but you always know where it might be kept, and who to ask. Archives, temple libraries, private collections, a retired scholar who has not spoken to anyone about her life's work in twenty years: you can find the door and, more often than not, get through it, because scholars extend to one another a professional courtesy that has nothing to do with liking each other. What you learn is never the whole of it. A book will be missing its final pages, a source will contradict a better source, and a name will appear where no name should be. Word travels that you chase such things, so people bring you what they cannot read: an inscription, a diary in a dead hand, a map of somewhere that is not supposed to exist.
