Background: Guard
Rain on the cobbles, a lantern guttering out, and one detail that refuses to sit right. Your mind goes back to that one case when the world finally quiets. The one you can't let go. You protect the city. You are the watcher, and the enforcer. The city needs eyes, fists, and compromise. You learned your part of it cold. You can run a suspect down three streets, hear the rehearsed line in a story told too smoothly, and sit across from a criminal with only a bluff. You do your best thinking at a dark window with a glass you are not drinking. You are good at it. But then came the case that would not close, and it cost you the post, or the sleep, or the people who used to trust you. You are still working it. You always will be.
You never worked alone, and you never worked clean. The years left you names on both sides of the lamplight: a sergeant who owes you for a night that never made it into the report, a clerk who lets you read what you should not, a fence, a beggar, a dock hand who notices every crate that comes in wrong. Any of them can tell you what is moving through their district (who arrived, who vanished, who is suddenly paying old debts), and some will look the other way while you do what the law will not, or cannot. But every favor is a loan, and you have borrowed from dangerous people on both sides of that law. One night they will come to collect, and coin may not be enough.
