Background: Soldier
You know what a formation sounds like when it is about to break. Someone taught you to march, to dig, to carry a pack until the straps wore through your shirt, and to hold a line with people you did not choose and would now die for. You learned that violence is a craft like any other: where to put your weight, which threats end a fight before it starts, how to make yourself look like too much trouble to be worth it. You have won and lost, buried friends, and taken orders you have not stopped thinking about since. Between all that there were the long stretches of nothing, and the dice and cards that kept a company from turning on itself. You still count the exits like a soldier, and some part of you is still waiting for a horn that is not going to sound.
You were baptized into an army with your first blood, and that stain cannot be washed away. You know the ranks and the courtesies, how to talk to a quartermaster, and which requests get answered and which get you laughed out of the tent, so soldiers, guards, and mercenaries tend to treat you as one of theirs: a meal, a bunk, and honest talk about what has been moving through the district. Better still, your old company is scattered across the world now, in garrisons, in gutters, in service to people you would not have chosen for them, and they remember who carried whom. Any one of them will hear you out. Some of them will need you to come at once, and no letter that begins "you owe me" has ever been about something small.
