Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
1 Favored Enemy, Weapon Mastery
2 Deft Explorer, Spellcasting
5 Extra Attack
6 Roving
9 Expertise
10 Tireless

Level 1

Favored Enemy You always have the Hunter's Mark spell prepared. You can cast it twice without expending a spell slot, and you regain all expended uses of this ability when you finish a Long Rest.

The number of free casts scales: twice at Level 1, three times at Level 5, four times at Level 9.

Weapon Mastery Choose two weapons whose Mastery properties you can apply when you attack with them. You can change your Mastery choices when you finish a Long Rest.

Level 2

Deft Explorer You have developed the skills of a seasoned explorer. You gain Expertise in one of your skill proficiencies, and you learn two languages of your choice.

Spellcasting You have learned to cast spells using Wisdom as your spellcasting ability. You prepare a number of Ranger spells equal to half your Ranger level (rounded down) + your Wisdom modifier.

Level 5

Extra Attack You can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Level 6

Roving Your Speed increases by 15 feet while you aren't wearing Heavy Armor.

Level 9

Expertise You gain Expertise in another one of your skill proficiencies.

Level 10

Tireless Primal forces now help fuel you on your journeys. As a Magic action, you can give yourself a number of Temporary Hit Points equal to 1d8 plus your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1). You can use this action a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Playstyle Notes

The Ranger's defining loop is Hunter's Mark into Extra Attack. Hunter's Mark adds 1d6 Slashing/Piercing to each hit against the marked target, which stacks multiplicatively with Extra Attack at Level 5. With two weapon attacks per turn and Hunter's Mark, the Ranger deals consistent single-target damage without burning spell slots — Favored Enemy's free casts sustain this indefinitely.

Roving at Level 6 adds 15 feet to Speed without armor restriction — Rangers in Medium Armor (as recommended) get 45 ft Speed, enabling ranged kiting or melee repositioning without a dash. Combined with the half-caster spell list's access to spells like Pass Without Trace and Conjure Barrage, the Ranger has tactical options that pure martials lack.

Subclass defines the secondary identity:

  • Gloom Stalker — Initiative spike + obscured invisibility + Wisdom-scaled damage bonuses; excellent ambush opening
  • Hunter — Clean modular choice system; Superior Hunter's Prey at Level 11 chains Hunter's Mark damage to a second target
  • Fey Wanderer — Sustained Psychic damage on weapon hits + charm immunity + free Misty Step
  • Winter Walker — Cold damage identity with TempHP on Hunter's Mark casts and Con save scaling
  • Hollow Warden — Eldritch transformation subclass with Frightened synergy at Level 11
  • Beast Master — Companion-based action economy; Beast acts independently each turn
  • Swarm Keeper — Swarm-based forced movement and flying speed
