What Is the Circle of the Stars?

The Circle of the Stars is a Druid subclass built around Starry Form — a 10-minute transformation that channels the power of three constellations. Starry Form at Level 3 offers three distinct buff forms: Archer adds a free radiant cantrip shot each turn, Chalice heals nearby allies when you cast restoration spells, and Dragon grants Concentration advantage and bonus hit points. Cosmic Omen at Level 6 provides a d6 modifier to rolls each Short Rest. Twinkling Constellations at Level 10 upgrades all three Starry Forms simultaneously.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Star Map, Starry Form
6 Cosmic Omen
10 Twinkling Constellations

Level 3

Star Map You have a Star Map — a Tiny object you can use as a Spellcasting Focus for your Druid spells. While holding this map, you have the Guidance cantrip if you don't already know it, and you always have Guiding Bolt prepared.

You can create a new Star Map whenever you finish a Long Rest.

Starry Form As a Bonus Action, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape to take on a starry form for 10 minutes. When you activate this form, choose its appearance from the Starry Forms table.

FORM BENEFIT
Archer When you activate the form and as a Bonus Action on your subsequent turns, you can make a ranged spell attack, hurling a luminous arrow that deals 1d8 + Wisdom modifier Radiant damage on a hit.
Chalice Whenever you cast a spell using a spell slot that restores Hit Points to a creature, you or another creature within 30 feet of you can regain Hit Points equal to 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier.
Dragon You gain resistance to all damage types. When you make a Concentration check, you treat a roll of 9 or lower as a 10.

Level 6

Cosmic Omen Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can consult your Star Map for omens. When you do, roll a die. Until you finish your next Long Rest, you gain access to a special Reaction:

  • Weal (even roll): When a creature you can see within 30 feet of you makes an attack roll, an ability check, or a saving throw, you can take a Reaction to roll a d6 and add it to the result.
  • Woe (odd roll): When a creature you can see within 30 feet of you makes an attack roll, an ability check, or a saving throw, you can take a Reaction to roll a d6 and subtract it from the result.

You can use this Reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Level 10

Twinkling Constellations The constellations of your Starry Form improve. The 1d8 of the Archer and Chalice forms each become 2d8, and while the Dragon form is active, you have a Fly Speed of 20 feet and can hover.

Playstyle Notes

The Circle of the Stars is the versatile utility Druid. Where other Druid subclasses spend Wild Shape charges to transform physically, the Stars Druid uses Wild Shape to enter a 10-minute Starry Form — a buff overlay rather than a body swap. You keep your hit points, your spells, and your actions; you just gain additional abilities.

The three forms serve three different party roles in the same day:

  • Dragon form is for survival — Resistance to all damage types is a strong defensive ability, and the Concentration floor prevents spell disruption on poor rolls.
  • Chalice form turns every healing spell into two heals — the spell's target and a free 1d8+Wis on a second creature within 30 feet. Pair with Cure Wounds or Healing Word for efficient party healing.
  • Archer form adds a free Radiant attack every turn as a Bonus Action — no spell slot required, scales with Wisdom modifier. Useful when concentration is held by a control spell and you'd otherwise have no damage output.

Cosmic Omen at Level 6 converts each Short Rest into a day's supply of +/- d6 reaction modifiers. At high proficiency bonus (4+), this is 4 reactions per Long Rest — enough to swing several important rolls.

Twinkling Constellations at Level 10 upgrades Archer and Chalice from 1d8 to 2d8, and gives Dragon form flight. The flight is particularly notable — 20 feet hover while maintaining Resistance to all damage makes the Level 10 Dragon form a strong sustained defensive posture.
